I'm getting ready to buy my first mini split, looking for a 24,000 btu to cool 4 1000 watt air cooled hoods. What's a good brand, and distributor to go with?

if you want the good ones, your going to pay for them

fujitsu
mitsubishi
freidrich

I always just search ebay for free shipping and lowest price, the cost of shipping alone can kill a deal.

I just purchased and installed a Fujitsu 32,000btu split system with a heating mode and the ability to run at a temp of -20 Celsius in outdoor temps. I tell ya it was the most expensive piece of equipment I have in my room and it took 3 years to convince myself, I wish I would have put the 6K out 3 years ago! The unit went in around april first, I set it to 72 degrees on auto and the unit keeps the room there 24 hours a day, if it needs to kick into heat mode at night or whenever, it will. Don't worry about a temp. drop at night, this is a total myth and useless information. The outdoor unit went under my enclosed deck and is so quiet that the heat is the only thing that gives it away. This unit has given me the ability to run 2 large de-humidifiers also, keeping my humidity in check also. My room is 10x20, I run 12 600 waters in 2 exhaust loops with 12 250 waters of T-5 4 packs. It works so well that I have ran a inline 6 inch fan from my flower room to my veg and am able to cool it also. You can buy a separate head that will allow you to run two rooms but this was a cheaper route for me to go. Invest in one if you can afford one, they will pay for itself in no time flat. Good Luck

I purchased originally, the self contained unit (forget the name now), not from e-bay but from a magazine "Rosebud". The unit cost $2200 after shipping and was pretty easy to install. Within a month it coded and the service behind it was garbage. By the time I was able to get someone to call me back my crop would have been totaled ($20K). I was able to get my money returned but not before putting out money for another unit. Lesson learnt...if it seem to be to good to be true...it prolly is! You might have better luck but I won't look at price without looking at the service package also. Just thought I would share my experience with the cheaper units. Good Luck

2 questions,

1. What was the model of this unit?
2. Does the unit automatically kick back on after a power outage? (I have brown outs all the time here)

Vkambull I have 3 1k vented at the moment. So from what I have read you need 2500 btu for vented and 3500 btu non vented per light. Anyone else hear anything different?

that's pretty close. Obviously your climate could make those numbers change a bit, but if you stuck to that guideline, you should be good.

Are you going to install yourself? I always dream of a mitsubishi split. But then i looked at installation. it requires 220 v wiring and copper pipe and special tools. if you install , its has to be up to code...if you worry about that shit

I am going to install mine as I am familiar with electric wiring and the ac install kit comes with quick connect copper piping etc so no need for anything special.

csu, you still have to vacuum lines an what not. Not sure about everything this is my first time to, but I'm ordering a 24k btu from same guy. Will be doing alot of research, and i guess buying a vacuum.

Here's from a different supplier selling same unit,

In short, you can do all the handyman work yourself and hire an AC company to finish the important - advanced procedures of the installation. For example you can drill the hole in the wall, run the copper lines and connections outside, carefully hang the indoor unit and unpack > place the outdoor unit outside on a concrete pad or flat surface. Then have the HVAC contractor complete the steps you can't perform / don't have tools for (vacuuming the lines, setting gauges, couplings, releasing refrigerant, testing for leaks etc). Also, remember no matter how good an install kit the manufacturer provides, these steps are a must for any mini split installation. Some online retailers will make you believe there package systems are more user-friendly or a 'plug-n-play' by marketing the install kits as "quick connect". But this is not true. Our install kits are quick connect as well, but this doesn't mean the difficult steps are somehow skipped. Nor does it guarantee a defect free unit. For example if the copper lines have a small hole and are not tested for leaks, the refrigerant will slowly leak out within 2-3 months, your AC will stop working and you will end up paying $500+ to have the system recharged and lines re-routed for what otherwise would have been a quick free of cost replacement. So it's worth having it installed the right way. Local HVAC companies typically charge by the hour for service and above mentioned process should not take more than 1-2 hours (time will vary for each application). But if they install the whole system out of box, the labor charge will of course be higher. Doing the simple steps and leaving the hard stuff for the pros not only guarantees a long-lasting system, but also ensures an energy efficient, effective installation.

Vkambull my plan sounds close to the same as you I am going to do all the drilling and running of lines and electric myself and hire the ac guys that I know and trust for the pressure tests and warranty sign off. Lmk if you come up with anything super important on the install notes. I noticed that you want to have the drain line on the bottom of the cable bundle during install. Just the small things.
so what was the $ on the 24000 btu unit hopefully I won't regret asking. Lol

I just purchased a Daiken 18,000 BTU split with heat pump. It is top of the line and was purchased locally at wholesale. I got the unit for 1800 out the door. I paid 250 to install it. It keeps my room at 64 degrees running 3200 watts, co2 burner and dehumidifier.

Daiken comes with 7 year warranty on compressor.
2 year on parts.
SEER 18

The local grow stores are selling 11k BTU units, without heat pumps for $1000 out the door.
1 year warranty parts and compressor. SEER 13

Remember, the higher SEER, the more efficient the system. They say every SEER point is 5% reduction on energy used.
