This is demonstrating the ability for a single person earning the national minimum wage to support themselves. It's showing that one can't without using taxpayer footed subsidies and expect to survive with simple basic needs.
$0.12 was my first raise, from $8.50-$8.62
I haven't missed a day in 8 months (since I started), never been late, never stolen, never slept on the job, always enthusiastic. "A few months"... 8 months, OK, I'll still give you the benefit of the doubt, lets see where this goes..
Since I haven't been at this job that long, I'll refer back to my previous job, which I kept for 4 years. It was retail, I started out at $8.00/hour, worked from 30-40 hours/week. The only way to get promoted was if someone else left, I feel like this idea that if you just work hard and stay committed is demonstrably unfounded, and comes from people who either work above entry level positions or have never worked a retail job in their life. There can only be so many managers/supervisors.. A spot only opens up when someone either leaves, gets fired or the company expands. An entry level worker can be the best at his job since the company started, if there's not a job opening for him to fill, he will stay where he's at until there is or until he decides to leave. This is how it works in the real world.
Exactly, only the vast majority of companies don't operate under this fictional 1950's'esque business model, where economic growth just always happens and the middle class soak it up.. late 1970's legislation made sure of that..
Or you won't be, and you'll be sitting there wondering why the vast majority of the wealth gained since the 1970's went to the top 10% of the country, then the right wing/conservative response will be "you didn't work hard enough/earn enough education/the right kind of education"...
That's the only legitimate response, I mean, people are just lazy fucks, don't bother looking at the actual numbers.. Lazy entitled fucks, that's all they are..

One does not have to stay at the same company. Suppose you start as a cook at burger king. If after some time they aren't meeting your needs, apply for another job. A meek person Ming apply to Wendys, someone with ambition, who now has a year of cooking experience might seek work at applebees or something similar. Now your being paid close to $10 per hour.
I just left subway. Was making 8.50, and it sucked. I'm one of those who works above entry level thanks to my education and work experience. But after 7 months or so of unemployment, and 2 years prior to that of having multiple jobs, I wasn't getting the decent jobs I was applying for. Jobs like subway are opportunities to show that you can be somewhere on time and follow instructions. Don't expect to make too much if you keep working at a place such as this, a trained monkey can do the job.

I dislike being spoken to as though I am a philosophical junior. My experiences command respect beyond my 32 years. From war, to travel, to women, I'm not going to be addressed as a child.
If you think you have had views like mine and that I will therefore grow into views like yours, you're incorrect. You have not experienced what I have. If I was going to be cynical I would have after my battle buddies offed themselves. My posts here are cynical because the site is under siege by imbeciles.

It doesn't take a "think tank" to realize that a subway sandwich shop has to base wages on COSTS, and not on the "needs" of the employees. Something's got to give, be it the business itself folding, fewer employee's, more part time employees working fewer hours, or higher prices.
Some of y'all need to try to start and run a g'damn business before you start bitching about the wages a cashier makes for their "skilled" labor.
