ok so i have several plants growing in miracle grow potting soil. I keep seeing stuff talking about not using it and i was wondering why? Then i guess if there is a good reason what should i do with my plants now? Transplant them to organic or is there a preferred brand?

P.S my plants are doing aweful so ill have a thread probally later today in the problems section to diagnose.

mg soil has nutes in it. makes it very tough to control what you're feeding the plants. The preferred brand is Fox Farm Ocean Forest.

Fox Farm Ocean Forrest seems to be the best potting soil. Did you use any additional nutes with the miracle burn? (cough I mean grow cough) You see a lot of talk about using it cause theres a lot better to use, more organic. Mirable grow uses chemicals, plants can get nute burn (dont think from the soil unless you add additional nutes to it). From what I've read and understand I just stay clear of anything that has "Miracle Grow" on it.

A lot of soil has nutes in it (including FF Ocean Forrest that you recommended ;P) but MG you shouldn't have to add any nutes for at least 3 months.

so that could exsplain stunted growth and occasional burns after heavy watering? Should i do a flush? re-transplant it? or say fuck it and see what happens? thanks for the posts

the concentration of nutes in MG is far greater than most soils. including ocean forrest. seedlings do not neeed any nutes for the 1st 2 weeks. and yes the mg soil alone can cause severe nute burn and kill seedlings without any added nutes :)

From what I can gather having read a shitload of posts dumping on MG, most people don't like it 'cuz it's not very newbie friendly. You won't need to add ferts for at least a month, and if you use MG ferts after that, use them at 1/4 strength to start.
Miracle Gro works. It's just that there are others that work better, or are more forgiving for newbies like us.
Most people don't like it because it's cheap, and will kill your plants quick if you fuck up. And most new growers DO fuck up. I know that my first grow (of course it was MG) everyone told me to use a fraction of what MG recommended, and I was thinking to myself that more is better, so I used it full strength, with the same predictable results. I killed off 7 out of 8 plants. The one survivor is a testament to the stamina, hardiness and constitution of this strain. By all rights, it shouldn't have lived, but it did and gave me some really nice bud for all my trouble.

I'd say that most new growers go for MG because it's relatively cheap, and readily available. Most new growers are also extremely over attentive, and almost invariably start ferts right away, or over do them when they DO start feeding.
That would explain the high failure rate with MG. Used in moderation, I don't see why it wouldn't do as well as any other chemical fertilizer. It's DEFINITELY not for the beginner.
Maybe thats what we need to do, steer new growers away from MG until they know what they're doing. Of course, by the time they know whats up, they'll know that there are much better ferts out there and won't even go to MG at all.
As long as MG is so readily available (and cheap), and as long as there are impatient people who want to grow their own without doing any research or go thru much effort, we are gonna hear the horror stories of failed grows.
THIS is where the true grower emerges. Either they give up, or study the failed grow to figure what went south and learn how not to repeat that.

Well put

This is my first grow, i was gonna start off with hydro. But decided soil, i'm using FF Ocean Forrest and Floranova Grow and Bloom. I should of went with Advanced Nutrients instead but its ok. I'm also looking into using Sweet Leaf from AN, and Wet Betty :D I was just gonna use only the floranova for my 1st but doing more research on things and getting a little more "confident" on using extra nutes/additives like that lol

Yeah, I thought about going the Hydroponic route myself, but I'm doing good with soil. From what I hear, with hydro, if things start heading south, they do so REALLY QUICK. With soil, if you get a problem, it's a gradual thing (for the most part). And soil doesn't need pumps, timers, etc, or anything else that can break down on ya.
I might give it a go at some point, but for now, I'm good with dirt.

were can u buy fox farm i looked at a few places but they didnt have it
but i was thinking about getting a soil called black rose or is it gold rose idk im baked

Post a picture before you do something like transplant. You might be better off leaving them as is and just change how you're watering and stop feeding nutes if you are. When you overwater MG soil it releases too much nutes and burns, so don't try to flush.

If it's not dead yet it'll probably recover if you care for it right and give it a little time, but if you transplant it while already weakened that could be the last you see it alive, just depends.

the cfl grow book recommends it for a cheap grow, i actually just tried the miracle grow soil, and my plants are still doing good, so no complaints from me :)

I have been using MG for about 15 years,Some good grows and som bad. With MG you have to watch your plants as you go and don't over feed. I have gotten some very good grows with MG. You just have to watch what your doing!

I think the MG is good for newbies. No nutes (*THAT* is the prob! newbies wanna nute it) Leave the MG alone for like 2 months. Just water.

Add some perlite (a lot) and some dolomite lime (its pH is 7.0, so you can't add too much) And you are good to go. Also don't over water. Wait until the pot gets light, or leaves start to wilt, which ever comes first.
