More DIY ideas..Caution: IDEAS! (only ...)

Well ..
Ain't about a grow light ,this time ...
A friend who is an architect ,asked me for a designer's desk lamp ...
LED lamp ,to be ...
She specifically said : " - Not something expensive ,but as "fancy-cool " as possible ... "

Women ...
...
Anyway ...

-24x cheap asian leds : 12x WW 3K 80Ra & 12x NW 5K 75Ra ( ~$10 )
- 1x 24x mcpcb from e-bay (~$5 )
- 1x led driver from e-bay (~$10)
-4x 1m different aluminum profile bars (~$15 )
- piece of PMMA (plexiglass) (~$1 )
- Inox screws,washers,bolts & rivets (~$5)
- some aluminium rivets
- 1 x stainless steel rod salvaged from an old inkjet printer
-Internal parts from old VCR player
-Tattoo machine tube handle
-2x small heat sinks ,salvaged from old sound amplifier .
- 2x springs and 2x Inox chain rings

Total cost : < $50

So ....

The lamp (installed on a wooden box) :


Pitch - Yaw mech.


Balancing counter weight ...
Yes ,weird and it also spins really fast / smooth (two ball bearings on that VCR player part )...


Lamp unit mech .


Heatsinks (glued with thermal conductive epoxy ) ,mcpcb ,leds and the PMMA protective screen ...
(it rotates also to be cleaned easily )


I hope that she will like it ...
(wiring is not the final one ...Just for testing .)


I know ,not much to do with herbs and growing ,but ...
I'm just sharing some ideas with people I do not actually know in person ...
But nevertheless I still like them a lot .

did you use a thrust bearing at the yaw mechanism?
Can you tig weld? If you could tig all those riveted joints.....

maybe one of them phosphor panels to give it the flush apple type look? Does look nice that way too..

One of the main " ideas " behind this concept ,
is the wide range of possibilities (building-wise ) using as main material different alumium profile bars and
screws & rivets as "joining" method.The metal -work tool kit a DIYer needs is :

-a riveting tool
- a small hand-saw for metals (150 mm saw blade )
- a large flat /straight file (medium grit )
-a small file set (square ,round,triangle ,etc )
-a bench drill would be nice ,
with 1 mm - 2.5 mm- 3 mm -4mm -5 mm -6 mm -8 mm -10 mm drill set ,
sand paper wheel ,and some saw cups for making large holes and/or aluminium discs ,30-80 mm
is a fine range to choose from .
-tapping bits and tapping wrench ( mainly M3 ,M4,M5 & M6 )
-a sand paper sponge
- a fine punch
-a small hammer
-oil lubricant / thin mineral oil

Quite small and simple metal-working tool kit ,
but it can do wonders .

Well,as I've already told you not much to do with led grow lights,this time.
The main idea behind is to reveal what a DIYer can build,
using simple materials and tools.
And that's pretty relative to building led grow lights.

Also one can take some ideas how to install a micro-herb led light ,
under the kitchens cupboard .

..
Or illuminate some artwork ...


Or illuminate the building bench,
so we can work all night making more LED grow lights!



Some parts used into making this lamp,
were salvaged from various household electronic equipment found thrown at junk.
An old VCR player,an ink-jet printer ,a sound amplifier ,a tattoo machine...

Who said that chinese leds and drivers are totally junk ?
Well ,at least they can be used to make great cheap lights ...
(Not for "growing" purposes ,of course ..)
With a tad of imagination ,as always ...
Hey ...This lamp has a total cost under $50 ...
And looks pretty neat ,I think ...
At least for being made out of ..." junk "

Rivets are the shit! I used them in my last DIY project; cheap and effective!

Engineering is a known side effect of growing/smoking weed.

Oh, I wish that were the case!

I wish I had a fraction of engineering talent and creativity pooled here.

At least I can experience the thrill of building something practical, beautiful, and effective vicariously.

Some more ideas ..
I've used -lately- a fan that almost surpasses ( performance / silence ) the 140 mm Noctuas that have been used before.
Same high quality ,but at almost half the price !
