More Lumen = more THC? I think not

That is only so accurate. Genetics set the limit on how much THC there can be, but a poor or sub-par growing environment, growing problems, errors, etc. will result in the full genetic potential not being reached.
this is very true.

my first grow, 11w cfls and little airflow, lousy ferts and soil.

aside from a "subpar" (lool) yield. the potency was None.

3rd grow i did, Exactly the same strain, knocked me on my ass. that much difference in potency (what made the difference? few months of reading on the internet, buying better equipment and experience)

In an article in High Times that I read a good while back it said that quality results from 50% genetics and 50% environment/conditions/grower skill. I have no clue where they came up with 50/50, I think they pulled that from the air, but in essence High Times was correct. There are no guarantees that if someone picks a trains rated at 20% THC (or whatever percentage) that they will end up with herb with 20% THC. If they provide their plants the best possible environment and if they do everything right, they might achieve 20% THC. But for everything they do wrong and with a less than optimal growing environment the THC percentage they end up with will drop.

That is why so many times over the years I have told people to not slap together some Rube Goldberg nickle and dime setup just so they can start growing quickly and instead save their money and put together a quality setup that will give them a chance to bring out more of the genetic potential of the strains they pick to grow.

People would always be better off and happier with the final results if that were done. Everything that can be done to create the best possible growing environment will pay the grower back in yield and quality.
