im still trying out new ways to grow how much light would you need to keep 3 mothers healthy and can you keep the mothers for a long time say a year
Hi, I veg 1 mother 24" tall in a 5gal recirc bucket. She's planted in expanded clay (hydroton) and is rooted into a 1gallon integral mesh basket top that snaps on the bucket. I agree with the 1st reply, use T-5's . I use 3 24" tubes with mylar on the walls of her space and she is beautiful. Two 24" tubes would the fewest I'd use. I had one go out while I was away and the difference in growth was visibly clear. Less light=less growth is the bottom line. More light enables the plant to create more food for it's self and that translates into a healthy plant & growth. So I say the more light the better, however you do it.
Some folks are having pretty good success with CFL's too, they seem to put out a little more heat though. T-5's are very cool, very important for indoor environment issues.
Mother longevity: I've had a mother go 18 months no sweat. I put her out to flower and she made some sweet colas. She was essentially a sort of a Bonsai, very shrubby in her shape and look. Some believe that the 'vital' energy of a plant wanes with time and clones. Meaning clones produce wimpier and wimpier plants instead of healthier robust ones. Hard to say. I don't see that happening in my mother plants, they all kick ass from first clones to last. As a habit of indoor growing though, I think changing out your Mother once a year is a good thing...After all it really is just an annual designed to last a growing season, flower and die.
I've switched Mothers in as little as 3 months though, especially if anything weird is happening you can't reverse, damaging fungi usually, sometimes Mites. You can nearly eliminate these problems though by being a attentive gardener & over building your atmospheric systems;Exhaust Fans, circulation, de-humidifiers, etc.
Hope this helps, Happy Gardening, GrowIT!
