A strain is specific genes, you twat. It's a specific genetic lineup that resulted in the "strain", which is just a label denoting certain genetics. So you're saying genetics don't matter, but genetics do matter?

that, and/or breeder as a lot of breeders are using watered down inbred genetics making a strain that SHOULD be awesome and turning it into generic. i missed the days of real haze, though i started out smoking columbian gold, and there are many that say what passes for haze today is nothing like the real deal. most of it is nothing like columbian at the very least.
if the OP has misinformation in their head, then correct it, but that troll name calling shit is uncalled for. talk about the info and not the OP's momma. oh man, some of you up in here are real insecure. calling someone a name is not the best way to educate them.
strains make more difference than any other variable though. afghani and even generic watered down hazes are nothing alike at all. even within strains too, as mentioned, PHENOS pop up giving different flavors or effects like with skunk #1 which has roadkill and cheese phenos at the very least, and maybe california orange and/or lemon skunk. i could swear i remember hearing of other skunk #1 phenos too.
of course environment DOES make a difference too. there's a lot of ways to screw good weed up with piling it up and letting it dry into fermenting brick probably being the worst offender, that, or growing in nutrient free dirt, but starting with the best genetics you can get, whatever your preferences are, is the best 1st step to better weed. getting said genetics from a top breeder makes a difference too though. there's going to be a noticeable quality difference between beans from nirvana and breeders like mr nice, TGA & Subcool, sannies, DNA genetics, DJ shorts, SOMA & TH seeds etc.
if you're getting crappy results with different strains, maybe you're getting them from a schwag breeder or a sketchy seed swapping bank. a lot of strains can be similar, but they can also be totally opposite too. there's an amazing variety of flavors and effects out there.
