My $0 PC Grow Box

Well, I threw together a PC grow box after doing a little research on it. My budget for the box was about $50 but I ended up spending nothing to make it. I recycled just about every material I could possibly use to save on cost and I believe it turned out very nice for spending nothing.




The walls are lined with electric tape and styrofoam and it's blocking out and keeping in light very nicely. The two fans came with the old computer I stripped down for parts. The seedling is bagseed planted in two-liter soda container that I cut down, and it's sitting on top of ducting to get it close to the lights. I found the ducting in my basement and I put it to good use with the intake fan, too. The lights were stripped off of broken lamps also found in my basement (it's like a ghetto walmart in there )

It seems to me you could LST a plant horizontally, get a few tops and get a decent amount of quality weed against the money invested in the project.

As far as what I think of the box, it is good stuff. Big ups. However, according to my reading of your description, it seems that the intake fan is connected to that long piece of ducting. If that is the case, I think that the fan may be more effective if you remove the ducting. It will also allow a light breeze to blow against the plants, strengthening their stem and circulating air. You could also use both fans as exhaust fans while opening a space in the back of the box that will serve as a passive intake.

Just a few ideas for you to consider, but like they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

I think you should have done more research... good luck, but I think you'll need a miracle to harvest anything out of that.

Lst was exactly what I was planning actually, and topping if necessary. I had the ducting on to get rid of the light escaping. Any idea on how to lightproof the fan without ducting? Also, if I were to reverse the direction of the intake fan to make passive intake, wouldn't I run into problems with more light leaking or even smell leaking? I also don't think the size of the box would permit me to be able to build a single carbon filter to fit both fans inside the box, so I would have to have a carbon filter on the outside. (WOOOAAHH I just had the idea to set an older-style monitor (The larger kind) on top of it with a carbon filter inside and a fan pushing air out the back. Yay or Nay?) Or I could build two small filters and just replace them more often.
I'm not expecting any real yield from this setup at the moment, as my schedule doesn't permit me to complete the grow (this will just serve as a learning experience). I actually plan on doing a real 3 month (or so) long grow from early august to early to mid november because I'll be able to take care of it around that time. Thanks for your input!

[sarcasm] Thanks so much for your support! [/sarcasm] I wasn't really looking to be put down. What flaws do you see in the design? I was going to do lst (and possibly combine it with topping) to keep it short. PC grow boxes work just fine if you're not looking for a large yield.

Sometimes it gets a little smug around here.

And sometimes it's just plain disdainful..

Yeh whether u get a decent wield or not it cost nothing.. so anything is better than no thing at all.

Ignore the dismissive comments, its all a learning curve, and for me, half the fun! I would suggest you check out some of the threads on this site though. I have learnt alot. Some people have had loads of success with PC grow boxes... I will be watching with interest! Big up ya fella!

Sounds and looks like you are having fun. Isn't that what it's all about? I hope your Winter crop is good and plentiful. Keep up the fight.

At the very least, you'll learn something.

I upgraded to a rubbermaid grow box. It can fit a couple more plants that a pc grow box can so I'm happy.
