my 1000 watt hps

i swear to god a 1000W hps is too powerful. its like 2 ft away from the top of my plants, and i THINK its burning them. how can i tell for sure, i could probably hold my hand under the light for a week before it started to burn.
the light is in a room that is: 7ft wide, 4 feet deep, and 8 feet tall.

2' should be fine depending on the age of the plants. If they are young you might want to start high and move it down to a safe distance, move as much air as you can and pull lots of heat out of your room. If you're covering that entire area I would say (2) 600s would be better or a light mover. Its not that they are too powerful its that they're too GD hot, which is why they can't perform like a 600w for single bulb grows.My 2 cents.

Get some airflow over the canopy.

i do have a fan below the light, its not blowing at the plants though, its just blowing.. lol. i agree, i have 600w hps, and it is sooooo much nicer to work with.

21 inches should be the closest you get to the tops with a 1000 watt HPS, so the distance you have is perfectly fine, allowing for a couple of inches of growth. I would say to invest in a 6 inch inline fan, with some ducting removing the hot air from the light area. That, and an oscilating desk fan right above the tops of the plants. It's all about pulling the hot air away from the light with some air flow right above the plants.

I have got a 450cfm fan cooling the light and to oscillating fans one blowing the canopy and one blowing the mid section and have my light about 11" from to the tops of the plans with no burning, its all about air flow, and a exhaust fan is crucial for 1000 watters
