I'd go with soil for a first grow. And get a carbon filter before you even start, the smell will be worse than you think plus you can get used to it and not realize your house wreaks when someone comes over.

im in the same situation as you i have a tent in my closet with filter and fan i just vent into my room and leave my window open for fresh air works wonders cant smell anything and i live in the uk as well have a look on greenshorticulture.co.uk thats what i use for most things, but i advise you to read up about everything first instead of starting a grow and asking questions when you make mistakes

so you've got a 4'x8' closet with a hatch to that attic?? yes, that is absolutely perfect for your first grow lol. you got like $700 so you could fabricate the closet quite well and smell would definitely be no issue.

shopping list:
-orca grow film - trust me, get this not shitty 4ml thick mylar or something like that.
-6" inline fan+carbon filter combo
-ducting
-some 1 gallon smart pots and some 3 gallon smart pots
-i run 2 400ws in my bedroom closet, it's up to you though
-t5 light for veg stage is a good idea

that is a good list i would suggest to get started.
With the orca grow film would I still need a tent or would I just fill the walls with the orca grow film? And how would the ducting / air / filter work in that case ?

You don't really need Mylar or orca. White painted walls will be fine. You don't need a tent if your are in the closet and plan to veg and flower in same closet. If you just put a light in your closet I would run an air filter attached to an inline fan pulling hot air and smell out through the filter and into the attic. If you go with a hps you will need to get that hot air out by directly pulling it out from a cool tube or vented hood for best results. Few ways to do it. Maybe filter ducted to hood/cool tube ducted to fan ducted to attic. So first decide on type of light then we can get an idea of heat issues and how to get hot air out. The negative pressure of the inline fan will pull fresh air in that closet from the outside room. Hps / hid is best bang for buck. T5/cfl works but have to have lots of light close to plants and will be repositioning a lot. Led not quite there yet kinda expensive.

Cool I would look for a 600 dimmable ballast with ventend hood or cool tube. Also like a 400 CFM inline fan with speed control. you will be able to control environment well. A 6" fan at half speed makes it much quiter if your temps allow it. If you can duct to addict perfect. Get an air filter and some ducting and your set. Run that see how it goes.
