My cheap and simple "quiet" fan box!

Its somewhat stealth, but also only 95% done. I can still hear it but thats becuase there are some leaks in the box and its...carboard. Plus, the exhaust end is open which is the cause of most of the noise.

What I did was go out and buy 25' of insulated ducting. I have a 4" Vortex so I went with the 4". Cost about $22.90.

I cut 4" holes in the sides of the boxes and placed the fan in the middle. Sitting on a pad of insulation.

Any extra insulation I had, I folded in corners. In between the boxes are some old rubber foam drum pads I bought years ago. I figured they would dampen some sounds. The extra space in the bigger box was filled with spray foam insulation. Then I duct taped the top and made sure it was somewhat air-tight.

Its going to be sitting on top of my cabinet which will be in my closet. The black duct will connect to a flange that holds the Can-Filter inside the cab. The insulated exhaust duct will blow out behind my clothes.

This was put together randomly without too much thought. One bored trip to Home Depot lol. Ill post updated pictures once its all installed and ill let ya'll know how it works out sound-wise.

Thanks for lookin:leaf: -VB

Im pretty sure the fan doesn't get hot because of all the air passing through it. I will check today though

UPDATE!

I plugged in the fan and shut my closet door to check the sound. I had just woken up so I ran to the bathroom to piss. I JUST now realized that the fan is still on, only because i went to grab a shirt out of the closet. The fan is completely quiet. So...IT WORKS!

But Beware....I had my intake ducting covered by a DVD case and this wasn't allowing any air to get sucked through. This made the fan run hot and blow out hot air. There needs to be constant and consistent airflow for the fan to stay cooled while in the box.

comments and criticism is appreciated :)

thanks! Ill end up cleaning it up a bit, maybe making the insulation on the ducting not as puffy and a little more discrete, this was just a quick way of hiding the sound.

it cut down alot. You can still hear the fan running inside but once i shut my closet I cant hear a thing. I suppose if i just used wood, it would work 100x better, i just got impatient.

Also, i have yet to hook up the intake side (THATS what makes the most noise) to my filter, which will be inside my cab so that should make it even more quieter.

Thanks! lemme know how it works and post up pics.

dusty, once the filter is attached to the intake portion it wont be as loud. Whats loud is the sucking sound it makes.
