My compliments to our president

I agree with him, and I think he is right. I wish he would do more to end the police state in America. Maybe this is all that politics will allow at the moment.

"We have a tendency sometimes to take for granted or think it's normal that so many young people end up in our criminal justice system,” said Obama. “It's not normal.”

“What is normal is teenagers doing stupid things. What is normal is young people who make mistakes. And we've got to be able to distinguish between dangerous individuals who need to be incapacitated and incarcerated versus young people who are in an environment in which they are adapting, but if given different opportunities, a different vision of life, they could thrive,” he added.

Maybe its because people pointed out that ruining a young persons life over a small drug offence is stupid and costly for the tax payers. Also hence his recent clemency for long term simple offenders

I wish he woulda/coulda did more early on but I'll take it. This "condition" of policing and locking up 1/4 the worlds population shows how we were taken down the path of law and order (both parties) and due to the drug war almost everyone fell for it. I hope he gets the balls to do more... like rescheduling our favorite plant.

One thing is very clear, a president cannot and should not be able to do anything he wants. There was no way to snap fingers and make marijuana laws go away there was no way to snap fingers and make gay marriage legal across the country. These issues with huge differences in public opinion take time.

Actually, the scheduling of cannabis is under the FDA's and DOJ's control. DOJ and FDA work for Obama. He could reschedule cannabis or even deschedule it today if he wanted to. There would be a political price to pay if he did, but he could do it. The drug warriors would howl and say he is destroying the country, but he could do it. He is not going to do it, and you are absolutely correct that these things take time.

Gay marriage is a different matter, and not under the president's direct control.

The point stands. A president can't snap a finger and change the course of a volatile political river

Andrew Jackson might have said, "all it takes is one man with courage". That was a different time though, and AJ was a pretty despicable guy.

I doubt that any current politician has the nerve to do anything controversial.

Desert Dude,

You could change that by electing Trump! He stands for what he says.
