Awesome. I cant tell you how much i appreciate all the help this dinky little thread has already gotten. I am definitely staying positive with this one. like i said its more of an experiment anyway. But, i am trying to keep it as simple as possible, as i know that is a big key with this stuff. So, just to give myself even better overall odds, i went ahead and threw the other two blackberry seeds in the remaining net pots. Leaving myself one with nothing so i have a work hole. I do NOT intend on growing all 5 plants through to the end, but who the hell knows. im feeling very open to what this grow starts turning into. But anyway, my plan at this point is to focus on the 3 blackberry seeds. they are feminized, and i know will be worth the time. So long as those three look hearty by the time roots start really dippin into the water, ill probably pull the other strain out of the res. Again, what i do will depend on what i see.

The random bagseed i expected was about to pop up has finally revealed its little helmet. Still a while to go before the cotyledons open up. But if this strain seems powerful i may simply invest in another bucket. Cant wait to see what starts happening! this DWC feels like magic, and im not even in the results phase yet! Excitement is only building.

One question i did have was when to start feeding nutes? i know to start super low on the concentration, but how far in should i wait to do even that? first set of true leaves? later? any help as always, very appreciated.

Thanks to everyone chiming in, positive energy all around!

9-05.jpgI put my seedlings in a rapid rooter plug then I buy the dome and tray fill the tray up 1/4'' with PH water then I leave in the done with lights on 24/7 untill roots show, then I transplant into the DWC res.

woohoo first seed finally cracked into view! not a blackberry but yay!

light was seeping into the rez more than i realized, so i had to bust out the roll of electical tape. patched up the spots that i could see were leaking light and then realized, the duct tape wasnt blocking ALL the light like the electrical tape was. Thankfully thats just the bottomish part of the bucket, so i will have to change that asap, which may not be til sunday!

Now here is a problem i need some help with...

i have to leave for a 5 day trip. leaving me away from the plants for about 4 full days. This is coming up on the 23rd, so at the very most there will be a couple very young seedling poking up when i leave. What do i do with my water level? I think i can get the ph to stay damn near 6.0 for a few days, but will i risk overwatering? right now i have the net pots barely touching the water to encourage the roots to drop in. Is this something i even need to worry about? i feel like i wont even have roots out of the nets by the time i get back. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

everyone has been awesomely helpful. good karma to all

PEACE

i would be concerned about my root plug drying out especially if you have the lights right on them. i'd throw a little hydroton over the top of the plugs so its surrounding the stem and covering the tops of the plug.

I actually had a piece on the seed. after it pushed it out and was no longer covering it anyway i simply removed the piece. Ive been carefully watching the plugs. the rez definitely seems to be keeping them moist. I was gonna wait until there was some growth before i cover them. Thats why i left a little room above them. will the seedling grow through the hydroton if i cover it before it sprouts?

to those sub'd, sorry for the lack of updates. im going to try to keep them very regular. except of course while out of town, or like this weekend while at work. Not sure when ill get a chance to post more pics. hopefully before i leave.

Anyhoo, first seedling is looking great. Looking the slightest bit stretchy, but im ok with that at this stage. This way i can get those first sets of leaves up off the tub. Leaf growth looks very healthy on the first true set. 2nd seed is just poking out of the plug tonight. This one is a prized blackberry, so i am eager to see how it does. It sucks that i have to leave my babies for these few days. thankfully my girlfriend will be able to do some upkeep.

I went and bought a digital therm and hygrometer. Cheap, so i dont know if i should trust the accuracy, but if it sucks i dont care. It says 73-75 degrees unlike the mercury thermometer i have in there that says 77-79. thankfully any of that range of temperature is pretty ideal. It also says about 47-49% humidity on average...

I also bought some more electrical tape. i bought some electricians bonding tape as well. looks kinda like duct tape but isnt, no cotton fiber or the messy adhesive. Useless, the grey tape blocked nothing. if you find black might work better, but the black electrical tape blocks out EVERYTHING. just wish it werent so narrow. Took a LONG time to finish covering the bottom. i still want to do more detail work on the top and make this thing COMPLETELY light proof. After im done with this grow, i think i will consider coolers like beaverhuntr has done. that seems awesome.

So far my rez temps seem to be pretty good. 69 is the highest reading i got, i get it down to about 65 with the frozen water bottles. I dont know how important that is at this stage, but i want to encourage the habit if nothing else.

Anyway, so far things seem great, though its early i have a great feeling about this! thank you to everyone who has already greatly helped!

alright. another question i cant find the answer to.

do i need to worry about my ppm being too low? my rez is nothing but R/O and distilled water, about half and half. Im saving up for a nice ppm meter, but for now im going by just ph, and sensible use of nutes. for now im not going to use any nutes until they are a little older. As i believe thats the consensus i have found online.

so is it possible to have too pure of water at this phase? the oldest one sprouted 2 days ago. i wasnt originally worried, but ive seen some conflicting information.

thank you in advance to anyone who may have an answer

You know I've heard you can have the ppm right around two - three hundred at the most in extreme cases. Normally man i use tap water for the first week or so till they show their true leaves then start nutes out at about 300-400ppm just to kinda Gauge my plants ability to handle the food. So... Yea :) kinda get a feel for your plants.

I always say and so do lots of people on here ... If its working don't Change anything. You will stress you plants out if you continually worrie about them they sense and feel your energy.

So stay really super high lol ;)

No when I grow I germ my seeds, take tap roots put in rapid rooter plug then put in dome under T5 light 24/7 I put about a 1/4'' of PH water into dome tray and keep like that for a good 1-2 weeks until I could see some sexy roots then I transfer to DWC reservoirs starting 1/4 strength nutes.. 8-10 days your roots will be drinking water from teh reservoir.

For real that's Seems alot more legit then what I've been previously told.. First time with the rapid rooters though. How long does your seed take to pop out? Just for general knowledge not trying to hijack anything :d

Yo dude in my opinion rapid rooters are way easier to start with than rock wool. A few days to a week before your seedling sprouts , in 2 weeks your rapid rooter plus should look like this.
