Here I go...

This is my first grow, I am a complete newb so bare with me. I have already germinated and planted 3 seeds. I got the bagseeds from some very green midgrade so hopefully i get some killer buds. I am using some premium potting mix I got from a hardware store it has .07% Nitrogen .01% phosphate and .03% potash. I started yesterday put my seed in the soil and it has already sprouted by today is that normal? That was fast the other 2 have yet to sprout. I believe the light we are using is a cfl its been on 24hrs, now that the plant has sprouted should I switch to 18 hr days and 6 nights? any help will be greatly appreciated. Pics coming soon

You can leave the lighting on 24/- for veg if you like. 18/6 isn't necessary and some say that 24/- is better anyway since the plants get more light.
Do you only have a single CFL for your three plants? You are going to need more than that soon. Also, make sure you don't over water your plants. They do not need water every day. Every third or fourth day is what I hear others recommend, some say water only once a week and others say water when the soil is dry. What do you have them potted in?

Be careful growing with 24/0. I made that mistake my first grow and wound up with 33% males. Everytime I've grown on 18/6 I've ended up with about 15-20% males. And although its slightly controversial, when I use 12/12 lighting for my entire grow, I get only 5-10% males. Of course this schedule also forces less plant growth. Unless of course you have guaranteed feminised seeds, then I'd say go for the 24 hr lighting.

How do you keep your plants from switching to flowering if you keep them 12/12? Even under MH or CFLs the plants will switch to flowering, won't they? And how do you get such high female to male ratios? Isn't that always ~50/50 (excluding femmed seeds)?

Hey Cheito!

Sounds cool. Good luck on your first grow! I'm on my first as well. I'm using 24/0 lighting with one cfl on one plant. If the lighting has a large effect on the gender of the plant i would like to know for sure.. Everyone I've talked to has generally agreed that 24/- is the best way to go for veg.

Can't wait to see how this grow goes. Keep us posted! :peace:

Thanks you all for your replies :D I have yet to find the wire that connects my cam to the pc. As far as watering goes I been debating if I should water and how much, the soil is pretty dry to the touch... I don't know what to do. My seedling has grown to be about an half an inch already i'm excited but also kinda worried on what to do next.

As I'm sure you've read, it's better to under water than to over water. Just make sure the soil is for sure dry before you water. Letting the soil get dry encourages roots to develop as they will have to grow to search for water. Just make sure you have drainage holes in your pots to avoid root rot. Hope this helps! Good Luck! :peace:

Easy; I don't. You see, I'm not blessed with large spaces to use. Therefore starting my grow on 12/12 lighting produces smaller plants and smaller yields; exactly what I want. I use 42w CFL's on 12/12 lighting. Less light gives more females. Isn't that even on one of those grow FAQ in the forums? And more light gives more males. Just like lower temps give more females. I mean, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Hey Atlanta and striking:

This is an excerpt from Dutch Passions:

From literature and our own findings it appears that the growth of a male or female plant from seed, except for the predisposition in the gender chromosomes, also depends on various environmental factors. The environmental factors that influence gender are:

  • a higher nitrogen concentration will give more females.
  • a higher potassium concentration will give more males.
  • a higher humidity will give more females.
  • a lower temperature will give more females.
  • more blue light will give more females.
  • Fewer hours of light will give more females.

Everything looks good.

I've decided to use 24/0 for the first week or two. Using (2) 48" Flouros for Plant Growth, and (3) 23W CFL's. Once all of my seeds have popped through the soil, I will then switch to my MH bulb (600W) and change the light schedule to 18/6.

I'm trying to keep the humidity around 30-40% constantly, its tough and drops to around 20% at times (which is fine during flowering, as long as you watch your water levels).

Temperature I try and keep is around 75-80 (during the day and night), I have a radiant oil heater that will shut off when it gets to about 80 and turn on when it drops to about 75.

My best recommendation, keep reading this website. You'll find a lot of information that isn't proven, however, an intelligent mind can formulate its own opinions on the methods you read.

Good luck and I will be watching! :)
