My Homemade Carbon Filter £25

So I decided I wanted to build my own carbon filter for my new room. It is based on an indestructibles guide I saw for an air filter.

I think the pictures explain what I did quite well, I used activated carbon from a local garden centre :)

That attachment was the end of my grow not meant to be there lol.

Side? The sides of the filter are made with tights :)

The Size of my room is 2m x 1.5 x 0.5.

Each of the fans I used moves 150m3 an hour, that would give me 200 air changes an hour but with all the filter material in the fans won't be getting anywhere near that but I only need 30 so I'm pretty sure it's sufficent for my tent and probably would do for a larger tent.

I'm not sure those fans would be enough. That's like an 8.2 CFM fan.

When dealing with pulling air through a filter or any length of duct, fittings(elbow, tees, reducers) static pressure has to be taken into consideration.

Axial fans, which you're using offer very little static pressure. The best for static pressure are centrifugal fans, but they're noisy as a bastard. The second are mixed-flow inline fans which is low noise like an axial, but not as low. And higher static pressure like a centrifugal, but not as high.

110cfm is the advertised airflow of these things, not rubbish case fans, got them off a friend of mine who is mad into his computers and everything to do with them. You can feel the pull by putting your hand under the filter and it sucks all the smoke away from a burning joint with ease.

Seemed pretty conclusive to me that the air stayed clear when I sat and blew all the smoke from a cig in my tent.

yeah those could be legit fans, just because they are casefans does'nt mean they won't push air. If your looking for pretty much any fan of that type in all different strengths n sizes.. www.frozencpu.com has what your looking for.

Been running this in my room for about 2 weeks, it keeps my temperature at a steady 20 degrees, too early to tell about the smell but it is certainly drawing enough air out, doing just as well as the much noisier purpose made carbon filter I was using before.

Here I am nearly 2 months later with an update on how this has been treating me.

Has kept smell down very well, just get a slight hint of it every now and then, I've got 6 plants flowering about half way into flower, they have quite a smell when you put your head in the tent.

Only thing I have changed is the power supply I chose, I am using one for an old scanner now which is a bit more up to the job, the one I used originally blew after about3 weeks.

So it works but I think the design could be improved on so watch this space as I might make a revised version for my next grow.
