OK, so ive been taking this industrial waste water treatment class at my college. I'm almost half way through the semester and ive learnt some information i think is extremely useful. When i first started growing, I went out of my way to fill 5 gallon jugs atleast twice a week, until i realized there is absolutely nothing wrong with using hard water. (as long as ph is adjusted accordingly). When water is processed through a softener or other type of membrane filtering system, all of the calcium and magnesium ions, which cause hard water, but plants love, are simply replaced with sodium ions. Basically your just filtering out all the goodies that cannabis loves, and replacing it with salt, which can cause all kinds of problems and buildups within the plant. I would love for some more people to elaborate on this if possible. In my opinion hard water is more beneficial to cannabis than filtered water. This is just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt!! Get it ??Much love RIU!!!

I have well water without a softener system and have been debating feeding my plants this water instead of filling up at a watermill. Im interested on hearing someones input aswell.

It just depends what your well water ppm is. Too high and you will be prone to over feeding issues even without using a lot of nutes.

Here's my take on it lol. I have lots of calcium in my water so I get mag lock outs and have to add epsom salts and foiler feed. Once the plant hits flowering i add it to the res. Another issues with using well water is the ph is harder to stabilize but once I dialed it in its not been a huge issue for me. As said earlier it depends on the make up of the water as well.

Yeah it depends on the water and you should get it tested.

Just to give you an idea....

If you have a lot of bicarbonate in the water it may take you as much as 2mL of some 36% concentrated acid to lower pH of a gallon. Not such a big deal with soil as it has a buffering capacity and runs higher anyway, but in hydro...

36% w/v is 36 grams per 100mL. That's 0.36 grams per 1mL or 0.72 grams per gallon. Even with sulfuric acid a third that weight is sulfur or about 0.24 grams then times 1000 for milligrams and divide by 3.7854 for ppm and you have 63ppm of sulfur every gallon of water which can build up in your medium and cause issues if you don't flush.
