my plants just seem to grow upwards not out

I'm new to growing but I have had a couple of goes at it before with cfl's and the plants kept growing upwards instead of turning into a nice little bush so I thought I'd get a 600 watt hps and all would be fine.... but still my plants keep stretching up what do I do?

How far along are these plants? Pictures would be wonderful, here i'll start to break the ice ok? koshers 007.JPG

Well theres a difference between stretching and growing up, not bushing out. If you have a 600 watt hps they wont stretch much, just lower the light. If you start to notice bleaching raise it a couple inches. Make sure temp stays in a good range too. You can also wiggle it back and forth..theyre not really stretching that much though, a little much for my taste but like many others
