My seedling just suffered a 14hour powercut

Apologies if this is trivial or ha been answered before. As you'll see this is my first post, I prefer to search and read thus eliminating the need to ask silly questions but I couldn't find an answer for this.

My seedling is 12 days old currently on 24-0 living in my simple closet setup.i went out last night and came home this morning to find there was no electric. I popped next door and apparently there was a powercut last night at about 9pm. The power came back about an hour ago meaning that my baby has received an unnecessary, unscheduled 14hr dark period. Does this run the risk of causing any damage, shock etc? If so is there an measures I can take to prevent this? Would it be a good idea, now that my seedlings had prolonged exposure to dark, to maybe flip to 18-6/20-4 instead of leaving it on 24-0?

Im a complete noob and thi is my first attempt so I'm sure you'll all appreciate that I love this plant. I bought her to life, I want to keep her that way :)

SR

PS. This is my baby. Strain unknown as seed came from a friend. A friend who I know buys feminized so I'd he lying if I said I wasn't hopeful :joint:

Dont make a habit of it and you are ok.... Remember in nature the sun isnt always out the same length every day.... If you were in flower you would have more to worry about, but your in veg. You will be fine..Welcome to the forum..

Thanks navyfighter, for the reply and the welcome. I was a tad concerned that 14 hours in dark would be a drastic shock for a plant so young so im glad to hear it should be ok. Now I've just got to hope they can finish the work at the power exchange without making another cock up.

yeah...no worries, it will be just fine.......looks like it's doing well...just be sure not to over water...the most common mistake that many new grower make

it looks like you are in a paper starter cup....may be time to start thinking about transplanting into a bigger pot

^^^^^^^^^ I applaud you for this.
Many newcomers are just too lazy to do their own legwork.
As Navy and Indoor said, you'll be fine.
Just don't make it a ritual:lol:
BTW, you can cut down to 18/6 if you want, for heat or electrical issues, whatever.

@Indoor Sun King I'm watering every 3-4 days at the moment, watering until it comes out the bottom then not watering until soil is dry to the touch.bive read many times how important it is to water moderately. Also it is still in a starter pot, I've just mixed the soil (JI#2) and perlite for the 10 gallon pot that it will spend the rest of its days in. I've read that it's good practice to allow the soil and perlite to rest for a day or so before planting so will be repotting tomorrow.

@Bakatare666 I have noticed this while researching, many question being asked multiple times when an answer could be found with a well worded search. As for cutting the lights I was thinking of cutting them to 18-6 when I repot. I read that the few hours dark can actually be useful, giving the plant a chance to rest and recharge before its next attempt to reach the sun :D

OK, just a heads up..........
DON'T panic when you pot up, and it seems to stop growing.
This could just be a few days, or up to a couple weeks, depending on how much larger of a pot you go to.
She is just stretching her legs and growing more roots to support the foliage growth.

That is much appreciated information, thank you. I haven't read anythin about potting up and that more than likely would have worried me and resulted in an unnecessary thread. Well prevented. While on the subject, Is going from a starter pot straight to the final 10gallon a good idea or would it be best to give it a happy medium for a few weeks first? I assumed only transplanting once would be better for the plant, less stress and all that but I could be wrong.

Another good question.......
Myself, I like to start mine in a 20 oz. Solo cup, then I usually go to a 1 gal., at about 25-30 days from sprout, then after a month or so, into a final 5 gal.
This works for me, even with a 60 day veg.
Some people will like you say, go straight to the finish pot, but those are usually real experienced guys or those that don't consider the difficulty it will present regarding watering properly.

I've got a couple of smaller pots so I think I'll do that. I'm far from experienced and want to make life as easy as possible for my little friend so I'll pot up orogressively I think. Thanks for the info

This is the same method I use solo cups, 1 gal pots, then 5 gal buckets with drain holes drilled in them. They slow growth for a few days and then they just explode with new growth after expanding there roots in the new pots. When I transplant to avoid shocking them I will fill the new pot around the old pot so it has a hole the shape of the root ball to slide into instead of filling the pot and digging a hole and dropping it in.

I like to score the bottom of my rootball into quarters, anywhere from a third to halfway up, and spread the flaps out over a mound of soil in the new home.

A quick update, I checked on my seedling earlier and noticed that the leaves had started 'crinkling' up. The first spear leaves have also turned to a 45degree angle. As I said in my first post this my first ever grow so as far a I know this is usual but the timing means I can't help but worry it could be something to do with the half day nap she took yesterday. I went ahead and repotted her as she was sat in dry soil this morning.

Heres a pic of her today image.jpg Can anyone tell me if this is usual or if it could be a sign of stress?

Looks like mine when I forgot to bring the temps down after I sprouted them.
How warm are you right at leaf height?

Hey man I appreciate you asking really good questions and I would like to throw my 2 cents on the pot up question as I have been fighting this over the last couple of months. I am now going from solo cup,to 1 gallon then 5 gallon and finally 10 gallon I veg for a minimum of 2 months longer if I am able. I tried to pot from 1 gallon to 10 gallon last round and while everything was fine there was a period ( about a month) where I was only watering one time a week. I much prefer to water at least two times a week then I can water and nute. So long story short I prefer to pot up slowly.

I've got 26*C, so around 80*F. Seems hot to me. What temp should I be aiming for at this stage of its life? It's only a small closet setup meaning I'm kind of limited to the extent I can ventilate without making it noticeable.

@Csufan97 I too opted for potting up slowly, going for 2-5-10 gallon. (I didn't have any 1g pots and using a 2g made more sense then making a trip to town.) I'm looking to veg for about 2-2.5 months depending on size of the plant. The downside to an unknown seed is not knowing what to prepare for in terms of space etc. but as this is more like a trial run for me before I invest in some feminised i won't be too concerned if I have to cut the veg period short to keep it under control.

Isn't 26C pretty close to 80F?
For me, I like it a little lower, closer to 75, and a fan gently blowing on your plant will help strengthen the stem, and help dissipate some of the heat generated by the light before it directly hits your leaf canopy.
Can you just add a small desk fan in there to circulate the air and see how much that helps the temp?

17 C ..........62.6 F18 C ..........64.4 F19 C ..........66.2 F20 C ..........68.0 F21 C ..........69.8 F22 C ..........71.6 F23 C ..........73.4 F24 C ..........75.2 F25 C ..........77.0 F26 C ..........78.8 F27 C ..........80.6 F28 C ..........82.4 F29 C ..........84.2 F30 C ..........86.0 F

You're right, much closer to 80. There is a small fan in there, I improvise by taking the fan off a netbook cooling stand and hanging it in the top back corner of the cupboard. Apart from that there's no real ventilation tho. As its a small space, approx 1.5x1.5x2.5ft I was thinking I could knock up a makeshift air intake/exhaust by boxing a piece of Hoover pipe to one of the netbook fans and feeding it out the back of my cab to remove hit air. Then one from the outside in for clean air. Possibly 2 each, extraction and intake as they would only be about 2inches diameter.

It may not work but it would only cost me £4 to get the 4 fans and it at worst would give me something constructive to do tomorrow..

TBH, I think you'd be better off if you only can have the one fan for right now, to put it close to the plant directed at the plant.
The circulating air will naturally carry the warmer air up and away from the plant.
Your ventilation idea sounds good.
Intake low and exhaust high.;-)
BTW, if you only have one thermometer, keep it close to canopy height so you know what the plant is feeling near your light, but if you have two or more, then you can keep one somewhere else to get the room temp.

I go from small pot to final pot, the trick to watering properly is don't. Water the big pot and leave it for a week or so, wait until the top is dry and then water HALF the amount you need to water the whole pot, wait until dry again and by this stage you should have nough roots down at the bottom to take a full watering. I know it'll be different or different climates, but like for me for instance just potted mine into its final pot, I know in the next 2 weeks I will only need to water it 1 and a half times.
