My seeds are germanating but wont sprout?

I have germd 4 seeds from sannies. I used Scotts plain soil and put the seed about a quarter inch down in a clay pot, water, and then I put saranwrap over the pot. Over the pot I have a 100 watt cfl. All of the seeds never sprouted at all. What could be the problem?

Did the seeds crack before you put them in the pot?

And I have never heard of placing saran wrap over the soil that is new to me, Im use to germinating a different way.

Yes they do, I germinate my seeds on a plate with paper towels. Then after a root comes through I put in soil and cover with saran wrap to keep humidity in. With the cfl bat 5-6 inches over it

Temperature changes can kill a seed dead fast also touching them can damage them also germing in just water can over hydrate them.

There`s no ideal way to germinate a seed the best way is simply put it in a substraint or rooting cube and add a tiny bit of water and then keep it at 26c but anything over 16c and it should still grow

I`ve used paper towels, soil, vermiculite, perlite, magic soil, root cubes, aeroponics and just water to germinate

I find that normally if a seed that has popped fails it`s because something just plain went wrong normally heat or the tiny plant gets damaged or over or under watered.

I`ve seen a seed shoot the wrong way, I`ve seen one end up in a pot under a root cube and dry out see most people that grow get stonned at some point and then stoner physics just takes over lol

bad seeds, soil to wet, seeds to far down in soil. For me it was to wet of soil

ive been having a bad strike rate too...i use rw cubes and am now trying rootriot plugs..im thinking if you dont pre soakcube/plug first..that means it dries out prematurely which leads me too use the spray bottle to keep them moist and that just seems to fuck em...mine just stall before the cap comes off....anyone know how to fire up stalled seedlings?

Stop covering the soil with saran wrap. Make sure the temps stay between 70 and 85 degrees. Do not overwater and do not water with nutrients. Make sure you are using seedling soil.

Here's my fool-proof seed sprouting method. I've never had a seed not sprout, even ones I've had over a year. Get a Burpee self-watering seedling XL coco tray and some rapid rooters. Put your seeds in the rapid rooters and rip a piece of the rapid rooter off to put over the seed in the hole. Put the rapid rooters in the compartments on the seedling tray so that the top of the rapid rooter is level with the top of the tray and fill around the rapid rooter with coco (comes with the tray). Put water in the tray. Place under lights at a reasonable distance (varies by type of light). Leave alone for 7-10 days. Viola, you will have sprouted seedlings. This takes all the guess work out of watering.

I have a 100% rate on my seedlings by keeping it simple. Nothing complicated about it. I grow in soil so this wont be for hydro people.
Germinate with the paper towel method: I take a peper towel that is damp ( NOT WET ) and place the seeds between the sheets. I place the sheets on a plate and cover with a small lightproof bowl to keep the moisture in and the light out. Check daily., It should only be 2 to 4 days until you see the 'tail' pop out. When the 'tail' is about 1/4 to 1/2 inches long I place the seed in damp ( NOT WET ) soil. I mix 1/2 ffof with 1/2 coir, with the tail pointed down and the top of the seed just at the surface of the soil ( NOT COVERED ) I gently push the damp soil around the root so as to ensure that it is not sitting in an air pocket. I do not use a humidity dome and I do not mist the plants. I just leave them be in a warm spot, under a couple of cfl lamps. Just keep watching them and don't let the soil get dry. If the soil starts to look like it is drying out add just a bit of water, a couple of tea spoons. Again DO NOT LET THE MEDIA GET SOAKED!!! Just damp is the key as you want the seedling to search out the moisture.

My method? pH corrected rockwool cube or a Root Shooter plug for soil. Drop the seeds in each. Place in heated seedling tray. Voila. 2 days later we have a seedling. Been growing since 1964 and I am amazed at how many do this paper towel and pray thing. And I have done it many times. That's how I know it is needless. I have an almost-100% germination rate. Heat mat from the reptile section of Pet Smart is more heavy duty and cheaper than the Hydrofarm mats. In fact I started using my kids old lizard terrarium to do seedlings in. Just too hard to keep the moisture from screwing the glass up with stains.

here's how I do it. I clone in rockwool, so I just use my dome and tray for seeds. I soak my rockwool in Thrive alive(you probably don't need it) 3ml to quart, and soak for hr or so. I squeeze just a little water out, put seed in rockwool half way. Put the lid on the tray with all vents open. with a 23w cfl for light to get the seeds going. and after 4-5 days they pop up and ready for soil or hydro. I never check ph ether as I get 100% gemination too.

My method ?

Take any substraint or root cube, soak it with distilled or ph`d water or even tap water if yours is near enough to 6.5 or 7

Let what ever it is dry out some then put the seed in it poke it down a tiny bit so the tip of your finger is in there, then use 50ml of clean water then put the seed somewhere that`s between 18c and 26c but not over 28c then just water as needed and get some light on it as soon as it pop`s

It`s not hard I mean you could just chuck then outside in feb and by march my guess is most of them would pop when you lose seeds its normally not the seeds fault its normally that something you have not seen happen has happened or something outside of your control

I lost 8 seeds a few months back all of a sudden they stalled and would not start growing again, but there was nothing wrong that I could see, then I found out the power had gone out and when it kicked back in my heat mat fired up way before my cooling system

They only hit 30c but the sudden heat rise was enough to kill them all

I was bummed because it was a collection of all my freebie seeds all kind`s of crap that I would have never paid money for but every strain there was on my "I have to smoke that one day" list and they all went in the bin
