My XtraSun 1000 Watt ballast doesn't work......

I bought a mess of 1000 watt lights, hoods, and 2 ballasts from a private source. Started growing with fluorescent and one light, plants outgrew the one light. Tried to set the other up and the ballast just hums. Checked cords and bulbs, definitely is this ballast. Does anyone know how you test to find out which component is bad?

hum = good, the expensive side still works - without hands-on test, my best guess is the 2 normal culprits with that ballast (if switchable), check the HPS capacitor and ignitor..if mh, check the capacitor for that side too...if switchable and neither work - points to faulty/dead switch and/or loose wiring. Hope this helps :)

How do i check those components?

ohm-meter if you unsolder the capacitors, which will tell you failed or not - capacitor checker to tell you if its operating within the micro/other farad range its labeled for. Without advanced test equipment...easiest way to check ignitor is to swap it with one that is known good and identical and see if issue is fixed.
