N00b who actually KNOWS shes doing it wrong. Full story on FIRST grow- with pics=)

Hey:smile:
Im Lauren, Im 26, and I love weed. lol

So let me start off by saying, this is my first ACTUAL attempt at a grow. So please. Don't flame me, or i'll be sad lol.

To the nitty gritty -
I've done essentially everything wrong,I'm aware and am not hoping for great results here. Just as an FYI.

1- So of course, me being impatient thinking 'i can do this, it wont be hard', germinated 6 bag seeds I found in some pretty decent nug..(still wondering how in the hell they got there to begin with) and had saved in a baggie and tossed in a drawer. Not exactly the best storage solution. Never-the-less, I put them in some damp paper towels, covered them with plates, stuck em in a kitchen cabinet and sure enough, there they were.

2- So here I am, 2 days later, the seeds have popped and are ready to be planted into a medium. So for SOME reason (I smoke a lot of weed, lol) I decided to plant them, sprout down, in organic soil with organic material seed starter cup things..... and put them under a plain old regular desk lamp light bulb .... in a pie plate with some tap water in them. D-U-M-B

These mother fuckers were DRENCHED and STRETCHED like you wouldnt believe. But me being the stoner I am, Im like, awww man look how much theyre growing, getting all excited..until they were barely a week old and already 3-4" tall. So of course, because they didnt have the light they needed the stems grew ultra fast, and started to fall.
I took the pie plates up to a closet, propped a floor lamp up in the corner where the plants were, covered the walls in tinfoil and let them sit. We (my boyfriend and I live together) kept them on 18-6, but they were still stretching, and not to mention, still sitting, drenched in tap water containers and starting to grow mold on the outside of the containers. Not good.
They continued to stretch a tad, and after 2 and a half weeks passed and there was very little leaf production we decided to transplant to bigger containers. my bf ripped the soaked containers and shook/tapped the dirt off with his finger (dumb) and we put them into larger pots. he had found his brothers grow lights from college randomly in his garage, so we'd ended up having one 6 inch florescent light, 1 large (idk how big it is) HPS light, and 1 random CFL bulb. We took em to the closet and decided we just didnt have enough light to go around for 6 seedlings. so we downsized to 3, and put two in one pot (not entirely sure if thats a good or a bad idea at this point in their life) and one in another.
The lone plant (well call it plant no.1) started to look better within a few hours under the CFL. The two under the florescent didnt show nearly the amount of progress as no.1 did. (I personally think he planted them too close to the sides of the pot) so more googling I did.
Thats when it hit me. Like a sack of brick weed (dun dun chhh).
Its not just about lights.
temperature, air flow, nutrients, humidity, the growing medium...every SINGLE thing counts when it comes to growing your own weed.
so i shared all of my new-found knowledge with the boyfriend and we decided to get better....equipment, if you will, and if one by some random act of god ends up female, then great. but we dont expect any to, and are going to continue growing the plants we've got now and chalk it up as a learningexperience and just .... try try again.
only with better seeds ;)

So currently, my babies are about...mmm, i wanna say 2 months (give or take a week or two) old. For the last 4 days, they've each had their own full spectrum CFL eco bulb with a round dome tent thingy. got a small self regulating space heater set up to turn on/off once the room hits 80. Its set up behind a basin thing full of water and 2 negative ion filters to add humidity (and also the negative ions are supposedly a good thing when growing). we're still running them on 18-6, only now life is a lot less stressful as they're now on a timer. Temp has been about 76-80F during the 'day' with 70% humidity. And to be honest - I really dont know what it ends up being at 'night', i've never checked...and i suppose a part of me doesnt particularly care as i'm not expecting much of anything to come from this, other than experience.

I would however, like to know what you think of the way the plants are turning out...given all that they've been put through lol, what im doing wrong, what im doing right, so forth and so on.
Thank you everyone in advance:D

your plants are highly over stretched i suggest this thread for some help https://www.rollitup.org/newbie-central/429767-replant-those-long-stretchy-stems.html
heres a guide to cfl lighting https://www.rollitup.org/cfl-fluorescent-lighting/41024-cfl-proximity-foliage.html
https://www.rollitup.org/cfl-fluorescent-lighting/107992-tutorial-growing-cfls.html
you need more light and it should be closer to the plants once you replant them
also take off the tinfoil it will burn your plants only use mylar or white paint

theres so much information on here so check out and do some reading
goodluck

Yep what sunni said...read it helped me immensely...I'm a noob to..well I'm on my 3rd grow, but my first was with CFLs and you want them about 2 inches over your plants...put your hand over the top of your plants and if the back of your hand is hot they are too...and 6500k for veg and 2700k for flower good luck with that hot soil don't water too much or it will over nute them and you won't like it..lol..welcome to RIU...

It's doubtful that anyone on earth has killed more pot plants than me. I started out as about the worst grower ever, but I learned everything on here and I finally got to the point I am at now and I'm a good grower. You'll probably kill a few plants and fortunately you're starting out with free seeds so no big loss if they die. Most die from (1) overwatering, and (2) too little light. I think you're aware that you fit the profile, LOL. Good to have you with us.

Most important is you are enjoying yourself!

The most detrimental thing to cannabis is over parenting. We are all guilty of it.

I would recommend to start with focus on food/soil and lights. Once you feel you have it down start adding another variable to your scope.

It is a weed; and will grow on your desk, in a moldy cube, with a desk lamp; and tap water.

Many of are here to help, but you need to help yourself, and buy something like Ed Rosenthals newest book. Even though I have grown for years, I refer to it often

CFLs are bad, um-k (Mr Garrison SP reference). They grow ok at best, but contain mercury, which sooner or later will be toxic, and should one break in your grow area well, you're breathing that shit

Instead of a long reply, I suggest you go to captainmorgan's flowering with leds thread (I think he uses soil), or mine, which is a high performance hydro

I have 2 tents one is HOT5 the other LED

Here are pics @ 7 weeks from seed

haha wheresitat, good read. this is great - you have now discovered a multitude of practices that don't work, which will make growing easier as you gain understanding of what plants like and don't like. no better way to practice than with bag seed too - once you get a handle on it you can spend a few bucks to get what you want and have stellar results. imagine for a moment that you got everything bang on right the first go around, only to find that your bagseed genetics were low quality - that'd be a kick in the ass for sure! you might want to pay attention to what the temp and humidity do in the dark cycle. oftentimes turning the light off will cause a temperature drop and corresponding spike in humidity. too much will cause you problems, you're shooting for about a 10-15 degree drop only, and a 70% humidity in veg might be ok but for flowering yer gonna wanna scale it back to 50%. good luck!

Not trying to be cruel but if those girls (or guys:o ) are 8 weeks old you probably should put them out of their misery and start over with a proven strain. They should be huge by now .... sorry! I just planted some Critical Kush (not a recommendation BTW) and they are are 15 days old with 4-5 sets of nodes. I am also fairly new to hydro but a long time outdoorsy guy and like someone else said over mothering them can be a bad thing re: nutes and water. Also turn the heat down a bit if you want to save on electric bill 75 is fine. Good luck but in all honesty I really think its a waste of time and energy to keep going with those plants ...... Again sorry but an A for effort!!!

If you want a good basic book recommendation, I suggest The Cannabis Grow Bible. Available from Amazon. It's not that the material there isn't available here...it is. But you also have to "weed" through a lot of conjecture and bad suggestions as well. The Grow Bible will get you to harvest with some supplementary questions answered here. For example, when I had a cal/mag deficiency I did post a picture of it to confirm what it was. Sometimes "real person" advice is necessary. But for basic grow info, the best think IMHO you can do is sit quietly and educate yourself, then come back and test what you think you've learned.

Welcome aboard! Once you grow once, you will never go back to buying.

Welcome to plant decimation 101! LOL!! Not one of us (OK, maybe some of us, but certainly not me) started out as a cannabis guru. I pretty much decimated my first grow. There is SO much mis-information about growing out there. First and foremost, remember this is just a plant (Biology and Botany 101 applies here) so if it doesn't sound like what you hear about growing is based in science, it's most likely bullshit. Organics is really the only way to go here. (Nomex skivvies on, so flame away!!) If you want some personal advice, hit me up, but I'm MIA quite a bit here lately. There are a WHOLE lot of extremely knowledgeable growers here, you'll just have to sift thru a bunch of people parroting what they heard or read to get to those who are giving advise based on personal experience. WetDog, GWN, Clonex, Potpimp, Unohu, mysunniboi (you've come a long ways pal!), amongst many others are the ones to listen to. Welcome to the Jungle, and quite possibly the most expensive hobby ever!!

Organics WTF LOL. I agree that is the way to go with soil for sure. And as Jack says there is a lot of good info here and a lot of bad but its pretty easy to sift through, if it sounds like bullshit it probably is, "A pound from one auto plant" hahaha. Anyhow good luck and yes we have all killed a plant unless very lucky and if not we all have made a few suffer lol.

Absolutely no need to start over; just add soil and cover up the stretched little stalk to nearly the first set of leaves. Not only will it stabilize the plant, new roots will grow out from the stalk. They are obviously hardy plants. :)

Well I kinda disagree lol, their 8 weeks old. Under normal circumstances they are about the size of a week (if that) old plant from seed so yes I would start over, sorry again not trashing the grow but lol. Given proper care they may grow into something special but all evidence would point to not.

Thanks to everyone who responded!! I appreciate the feedback...good or otherwise lol.

I certainly, at this point, have zero plans of starting over.
Even if all 3 turn out to be male...or even if/when(lol) all 3 die, i'm OK with it, cause as i said before, regardless of the outcome, Im chalking it up to practice/a learning experience. Once I (we, god forbid i leave the bf out of this equation LOL) get the hang on what is going to work BEST(though i know all strains are going to be different in one way or another), and set up a PROPER grow area we'll invest in some quality seeds...which brings me to my next question for ya'll (yea thats right, i said ya'll haha)-
What sites are the most recommended for ordering quality seeds? What strains are most recommended for an indoor closet grow? Dont want auto-flower but am considering feminized seeds....worth it?
Ive read that white widow and white rhino are A-forgiving plants (making them perfect for beginners) B-easy to grow (which...i suppose kind of ties in to forgiving, eh? lol) C- have high yields (with the right care) and D- are short squat growing plants, perfect for a closet or small space grow.

Im not, by any means, trying to have a closet full of plants. But I would like to stop paying for the weed I smoke.
Ive come to realize that paying for weed is like paying for a bottle of water.
Why am i paying my hard earned money on something I can have...essentially for free (in the long run). And have more of it? just doesnt make sense lol. Grow the shit yourself, and then take yourself on a vacation with all the money you save, lol.

I took up fishing to try and save a bit on the food bill...............factoring in bait, tackle, gas & time, my fish now costs me over $100/Lb!!

I did a fairly proper grow tent, 400W MH/HPS hydro grow on my first one, with two plants in bubble buckets. The entire operation, start to finish including the ppm meter, nutes, second taller tent because I flipped too late, etc...all came to about $1250. My two plants yielded 6oz. So even my first grow was a 50% discount off street purchasing and I have a much higher quality product.

I want a new cool tube/filter set up now, so that will cost me a little, but aside from that from here on out I'm saving money all the way.

And as for seeds, I order from Hemp Depot in Canada. Never a problem, decent prices and really good service.

Another good and possibly free book (depending on where you look) is "The grow book and equipment guide" Vol 1 and 2.

View attachment 2850537View attachment 2850538So this is my first grow. I have 4 strains:
blue thai
blue cheese
ice kush
afghan kush x white widow.

i am in the 6th week of flower, i have 35% humidity, 78 degree room temp, 400w hps running with a 1000w mh. Bulb. My set up is in a grow tent 4x4 with a 6" inline fan connected to a carbon filter. I have the plants in 5 gallon hydroponic dwc tubs, i switch my nutrients and water every week. My nutrients are as follow:
advance nutrients across the board:
sensi bloom a and b
nirvana
bud candy
bud ignitor
b52
rhino skin
than i used extreme serene, these started from seeds and i veg'd them for about 3 months. I topped and super cropped I'm veg stage. I followed all instructions for my feeding schedule and used advanced nutrients sensi grow a and b during veg. I used 1000w hps also during veg.
This now leads me to why i am posting. I am in week 6 of flower. And my colas are looking a little strange, they are not as dense as i thought they would be, and they have a bunch of 1 leafs at the top. And they are very skinny towards the top as well. I have attached a few pictures to see what i am talking about. I want to know if this is normal or if there is something wrong? Also will the buds fill in more?, considering i have 4 more weeks until harvest.

I have also attached a couple photos of the same plant grow in the same room just a different bucket that looks normal to me. I want you guys to see the difference. Again i would appreciate it if someone could help me. I was looking to get at least 2ozs off each plant because i have 10-20 colas on each but I'm starting to get worried that o wont even produce that much.
