I'm not sure of how much genetics are transferred through grafting, might be something to take a look into. I know with fruit trees, if you graft branches, the result is a combination of the two, ie tangerinexorange = tangelo. I have seen it done with peach/plum trees also.

No, usually grafting only works with similar species, so citrus with citrus, pit fruit with pit fruit, etc.
