Plus the mayor that was against the measure got ousted by the voters!

Nederland became the second municipality in Colorado to legalize marijuana within its borders on Tuesday night.

The mountain town's residents went further than Breckenridge, which last year legalized possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, and by a vote of 259 to 218, removed all criminal penalties against buying, selling, possessing, consuming, growing and transporting marijuana for anyone age 21 or older.

Nederland voters also chose Trustee Sumaya Abu-Haidar to replace incumbent Mayor Martin Cheshes.

Boulder County law enforcement officials said the marijuana vote was largely meaningless because state laws against the non-medical use of marijuana remain in effect.

My caregiver lives in Nederland and I've spent quite a bit of time up there. Keep in mind, this is a town that is maybe 2 miles long and thats a 25 mile mountain drive from the nearest city (Boulder) but that has 5 different dispensaries with storefronts and a ton of growers/caregivers living in it. They were just making official what has been pretty much obvious to everyone for quite a while. There's actually a guy up there who sells bumperstickers and tshirts that say "Yes, I live here, and no, I wont find you a bag". :)

dont get this twisted guys, this is not legalization, it is decriminalization.

is this a step in the right direction? yes. should you ffeel safe if you live in that town? fuck no. I've said it once and ill say it again, this has to start somewhere so decrim may be necessary, but it is nothing more than the Marijuana Tax Stamp modernized.

its a ploy that makes people feel safe, but offers them no real protection. will that town go after their smokers? no probably not, and hell say they even get the cops to relax too (which has been the biggest problem so far, cops not abiding by the rules of their own town due to 'federal contradictions') this will not stop the DEA from doing a raid should they think an Op of interest is occuring, and since they might want to prove a point, that Op doesnt even necessarily need to be very big.

Key words right there...not really sure why they bothered with such a measure. NO federal (or even state) protection is afforded by this. So remember, keep that grow on the down low. ;)
