I currently use a 400hps with a 4tube4foot t5 on the side...would it be better to just buy a 600w overhead and eliminate the t5? If these were only 2 options; what would u prefer???

Depends how much you're trying to grow. People come on this site and then get upset when no one answers their question, but they don't give all the info needed for someone to really answer your question. How big an area? What are you growing? How many plants? ETc. These are important before someone can answer your question. That is likely why no one bothers to answer your questions because too many newbies come in and ask random questions while giving no background info at all.

Yea, what they said. Theres no way to give any advice if theres no details of what they're trying to give advice on.
As for the question as you asked it, either way i would keep the t5 for sidelight whether its with the 400 or 600.

The more versatile your light sources the better. I would say keep at least 2 of the three present: led, hps, fluoro. All range in efficiency, heat, floor range etc.
And just so you know 600w bulbs suck to buy stay away. I would say run an hps if you can and add fluorescent and led as sup. I love my resin production from my flowering led and combine with close cfls and an overhead hps.

600 with a dimmable ballast. u can use it with a 400 watt bulb for veg and the 600 hps for flower. also bulbs can be purchased relatively cheap when bought online.
