I just recently discovered after pulling out the Christmas decorations this year that I may have found a potential place to grow my green. My wife who doesnt share the same passion as I do does not care for me to grow my own but doesnt want it to be around the kids. I found out that I have quite a bit of space in my attic. But this is my first time growing and I dont even have any seeds or materials to start. I would like to start with the smallest cheapest box possible. I have a few 50 gallon rubbermaid tubs laying around that may seem useful. Also I would like to start this winter. How do I regulate my temperatures because it gets very cold up there. But I just need a list of supplies(cheap as possible) and some points in the right directions. Im not sure if I want to use soil or hydroponics. Hopefully someone can tell me whats best in this situation. AND THIS BIGGEST HELP I NEED IS SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN LIGHTING TO ME!!! Im no electrician and the whole right amount of lighting thing throws me off really bad. Thank you for your help. TIS THE SEASON :):bigjoint:

Hey,,
sounds like you have a secret project to get on with.
Honestly it depends on how much, money, time, etc you have or want to spend.
So how big is your whole space, ?? are there sockets up there? and a few other question but I cant think of them at moe...
Could u run HPS's or u want cfl's,,kinda need dimension to say,,,
MY advice,,or opinion,,depending on space and that, run 1st in soil, it maybe abit slower but is alot more forgivin and technically cheaper.
for the lights hps 400w or 600w, depending, if your short on spaceand heat cfl's./ Im growing two nice plants under 1 250watt cfl at moe 1 week to go, this cfl(well not that bulb) will sone be my vegg light in the cupboard.. also have 600w hps setup in my tent now. anyway back to you. with cfl's you need to buy two bulbs, where as hps you can just use the one,,,cfl's u need one 2700k, one 6300k,, look at the lighting threads, and stickys guides and all that. theres good info there. you have a hydro store? pop in there if you can and explain your room size and they could fill you in and advice, shop around though as you can get cheapersomewhere else.
the hps need more amps, so in my flat I have to watch my amps so i dont blow a fuse. but the amps arnt huge,,but at least double a cfl.But you get more lumens. for a good grow you need about 10,000 lumens a plant(in flower, you dont need them at first but it helps to have them all the grow), you need ballest and buld, reflector(a must in my view for any bulb cfl or other)
Buy some drywall, however much 2x4, but smaller, screws and Id make a small room to keep heat in. get a thermo and humidty meter, cheapy so u have any idea of what your dealing with.
,,do you have a fan/ venting running through the attick???as the air in the attic maybe stale or very humid. anyway, if you do you can steal air outta an intake and pump it outta the house.
Sorry if this seems abit rambly but Im trying tohelp and give the basics. My other golden advice...use the website,if you got an hour you can find some gems of info. there some bullpoo but most of its good info. there more info than you need....really.
so..a quick list....
seeds-
pots-
soil-
lights-also a good 13gauge extension cables,u know with four or 6 plugs on.
and timer, u can turn them on and off urself but thats an arse, and really impratical.
thermo/humi stat(one of each or a combo)
nutes/fert-
watering can-
mister-
and in my veiw ph tester,or liptums paper.
fan-
Thats my minium, but really you dont need it all, just light and soil and seed.
Hope that helps abity...
Take it easy.

If you're thinking of growing more than a couple plants, you'd be better off with HID lighting - especially since you would have the ideal situation with temperatures. HID lighting puts out a lot more heat than CFLs, which would actually be a help to you in a cold attic grow room. I don't know how much you can afford, but this is a link to a great deal on a 400 watt MH/HPS light system. It is switchable from one to the other - for veg. and flower stage lighting, and it comes with BOTH bulbs. This is by far the best price I've seen on a comparable system. It would definitely be worth the investment if you want a nice harvest.

Here is a thread on lighting that may help you out too...
https://www.rollitup.org/general-marijuana-growing/723-things-know-about-lighting.html
And if you want advice from a veteran grower here that really knows his stuff, Uncle Ben is the man!

You need to do a lot of reading to soak up some good information, but the growers here are really helpful and there are lots of threads packed with useful nuggets of wisdom! I would suggest you start with soil, as it is more forgiving and a bit less expensive than hydro, but read up on both and decide for yourself. Good Luck!

Well being new myself reading has helped me alot. If you are trying to hide this from your wife give it up they always know something is going on and will BUST your ass. If she don't know you smoke it's going to be hell, talk to her and tell her you will keep out of site of the kids and save you money. If it does not go well forget it like I said, divorce ain't cheap.
