People make their grow boxes out of all sorts of stuff, but you should try to keep it air tight so that you can control the circulation, temperature, and humidity and then obviously light proof. Once you take those environmental factors into consideration you can add things like your thermometer, humidity meter, intake/outtake fans, reflective material, ect.

In case this sparks your ideas - I just finished the construction of my grow box with a wooden dowel frame including a base and top, for drainage tray support and light fixture hanging, and cardboard box exterior with ducktape around all of the edges. The inside surfaces are covered in reflective and insulating safety blankets only open to the intake fan at the bottom, exhaust fan at the top, and of course the door when it is opened. Note: this is a ghetto grow box, but it's working great.

Consider the parameters that you want to control and then cater to those features in your construction. Best of luck!

-also, the box is 2x2x5 feet wxdxh.

Home Depot carries wafer board (people think it's plywood, it's not), its going to look like scraps of wood pressed and glued together. There should be sheets of 4ft x 8ft for under $8 each, from these have your box cut to dimension. Once you have your pieces together gather 2 or 3 door hinges per box to make your door and some metal 90-degree brackets. Go buy wood screws and slap the thing together with a screwdriver.

If I was to do another veg box, instead of building it from scratch, I would consider looking at sales on misc cabinetry. Like kitchen cabinets. A lot of time Lowes and HD have extra misc ones that get put on major discount.

When making the box from scratch, my major challenge was making it light proof. I had even drawn plans and carefully considered how to build it, but of course would do it different if done again ;)

Thanks for that link above, that seems to be a good design to start from!

hahahaha, why? osb will work fine, and its like $7 with tax from home depot...not to say the least its a hell of a lot stornger than some bullshit "wafer" board

What would be the best thing to make a grow box out of?
you can just build a wood frame and staple panda film to it get a adhisive tarp zipper for like 5 bucks for the door and start settin it up be sure to duct tape all seems

i once used an old metal locking gun cabinet

what if i can get a trash can like this (
Garbage Can.jpg) and get a lid and put some lights on top of it, and put a fan it in should that make a decent grow box?

a trash can could work given that youre going to provide ventilation in and out of the can and be cautious of the type of lighting you'll be using so you dont melt the garbage can.

first problem that came to my mind is that if youre going to have lights on the lids... you would have too many wires around and all a mess when you try to visit your lady.
secondly, how clean is it? you dont want mites and how are you going to know you have mites if your plants are deep inside a barrel? do you really want to take it out everyday? its a big hassel.

why not build something out of wood to meet your needs? a cabinet would at least look more stealth than a garbage can wired up with a glow from the vents. just my $0.02. good luck

well i was just going to buy a garbage not get a used one. but im thinking now what if i get a 50 gallon rubber maid tub? those are pretty tall and i dont think it would melt easily and i can fit at least 5 plants in there. so what do yall think about that idea i really would perfer not to build anything.

7/16" O.S.B. - like $5 a sheet. Smooth side in. Note: wood surfaces inside of the box should be sealed. Because of the irregularity of the surface, hanging mylar will greatly outperform flat white paint for reflectivity.

i turned a sony glass door entertainment console into a small grow cab for my closet. its for growing dwarfs, top shelf has 5000lumens of cfl's with white walls all the way around, intake is at the bottom for my fan, exhaust is at the top with a home made carbon filter, underneath that shelf i have a tiny clone drawer with a single flouro secured to the bottom of the flowering room. it cost me about 20 for the lights, 10 for the entertainment center, 10 for both timers, 5 for the exhaust tubing. everything else was laying around the house.

just save yourself the trouble man, and do something more than half assed, plastic can catch fire quicker than any wood

I think you could make that work with proper ventilation. Consider using t5 strip lights wrapped around the circumference.
