if you put the seeds in a paper towel and in a jar (to germinate), does it need to be air tight, or no lid?

Turato..... The container should not be air tight. You need some air exchange, because the seeds do need to breath. You also need a temp over 68 degrees but not higher that 78 degrees. The top of the refrigerator works great.

Hope this helps...

I like to put the seeds in a glass of distilled water. No top. Put the glass anywhere its room temp. Whithin 24 hours you should see the seed has cracked. Then you plant 1/4" deep water and the sprout is up in a couple days.
