well it's either a metal halide or high pressure sodium.
If the light looks blueish it is probably MH.
If the light is reddish then it is probably HPS.
About 20 inches away is good but you can test by putting your light on and letting it warm up than put your hand at the canopy of your plant palm down and move upwards. Once you feel heat on your hand that is the minimum distance you want the light to be from the tops of your plants.

Cheers.

1000W HPS...how old is the bulb? you can use this light...just in the beginning make sure the light has some distance for the plant..but if youre only growin one plant, 1 HPS might be a lil overkill, unless you wanna veg that bad girl for about 2 months, and have a monster growing in your closer...if i was you id get a nice lil t5 set-up...get yourself about 6-9 plants going...then when they get about a foot tall throw them under the 1000W..it would be better use of light.

thanks --im starting the wonder woman in hopes to clone --i like to grow outside so if i can get 6-7 plants from this 1 seed(i bought 5) will be nice in the garden in june--i have plenty of cfl --do you think that would be better for the price of my electric bill? --i grow just a few in the garden for me & a friend --he has MS and i have disgenertive(?) disck in my neck --so the smoke helps-----new to cloning too so im kinda dumb in this area--i have a few grows outside under my belt--thanks for the info

here's a cloning tutorial...you could grow the one plant under some CFLs to get her going...wait till you have a bunch of shoots, and clone away!!

cloning is super easy man...ive even pulled a bunch of cutting and threw them in a cup of water...a few weeks later i had roots going...i just did that as an experiment...

just make sure you have all the proper equipment(i.e. dome, tray, heat pad etc...) Clones also dont need any nutes either...if you wanted to give them a lil something to maybe help, 1 or 2 drops of superthrive in a spray bottle should suffice.
