Need Some BHO Extraction Advice

Hello,

Okay, so I am trying to make my own shatter using butane extraction & winterization with everclear.

My husband used to make it, but he has passed away and I can’t find anyone to make it for me, so I will do it myself. I do kind of know the process & I have everything I need, but I just don’t know how much ethanol/grain alcohol to use.

I have 87 grams of ground bud, in a glass tube, ready to be blasted & yes I know to do it in a very well ventilated area. I have my coffee filter on a jar in the freezer along with a bottle of everclear chilling.
Now after I blast it into my glass jar, I know I have to let the butane evaporate in a pot of luke warm water before adding the alcohol, my question is, when do I add the everclear & how much do I add before putting that in the freezer to do its thing??

hey

the answer depends on the BHO u make and amount ...... cleaner the blow the less u have to use
everything i understand everything prefect a mix of 10:1 but glass tube and coffee 20:1 (ethanol to oil )

odds are if your husband was doing it with out a scale to know the exact weight of the oil he was doing ......fill just under the top of the jar with ever clear ( look on bottle and make sure it is the good stuff 195% proof not the 180%)

if your blow from 87 grams makes the avg of 10% returns
that is 8.7 grams to do the mix 1 gram of oil to 20 grams of ethanol 174 grams
1 gram of water is 1 ml can not rem if ethanol is slightly higher or lower know it is close so go with that (science odds u do not want to know)
500mls in a pint

if u make epic returns of 20% that is just double do u should be fine with just filling near top (be about 420-440ish mls in a pint jar that is higher then a 20:1)

i say near top to make pouring out easier full jars always drip down side before the pour effect starts

Wanted to welcome you and express condolences for your loss.

I'm currently learning extractions...so no expert opinions. I've done a few qwet washes and plan on trying dry ice...but no experience with bho.

thanks, I think i got it just right. I did get it blasted and evaporated yesterday & now have it winterizing in the freezer with the everclear, it is the 190 proof stuff, 95%. It has separated nicely, but going to let it sit one more day just to be safe.

thank you yeah my husband was good at this stuff, even growing, he grew his own plants, it was his passion. But I am going to keep learning to make my own extracts.

Cool...are you planning to grow too? If you need help getting it all together...there's lots of helpful growers here.. And good luck on the extracts.

Condolences for your loss sisterwoman.

Good to see you not afraid to get your feet wet. You go girl!

Your extract color suggests that you are running your extraction at too high a temperature, or for too long. Ethanol is a polar solvent, so goes after the polar elements like Chlorophyll and the water solubles if left to its own devices.

Here is our QWET technique to address those issues. Good luck, be safe, enjoy..............

i had everything chilling for 24 hours, even the ethanol also let it sit in the freezer with the ethanol for almost 48 hours, i read somewhere that 24-48 hours was a good time & I remember my husband did the same maybe 24 would have been better not sure what you mean by too high a temp, do you mean the water i put the jar in for it to evaporate??
Here is what it looks like now, I filtered it twice this morning to get the fat lipids out, is that what they are called?

No, don’t plan on growing, he had a plant that was just about to flower, i had to give that & his whole set up to our cousin to finish, i know nothing about DWC, he researched that for 2 years before starting his growing. But they are taking care of it and will give me what comes off it & all the other seeds i gve them, they will do the same, so I will stick to concentrates as i do have some experience from way back using ISO, just never done a BHO extraction on my own, so learning experience for sure.

looks good .......u can heat the bottom of the plate 110/120f and let the ethanol pass into the air no higher then 120 u will lose terpenes (those pic cooktops are great for this just stay in the 110 range ......temp gun gives me a 4-6 degree temp diff from what i set to the oil).......i like to use a fine mesh straining basket for cooking.....put it over the top keep anything from falling in/ bugs while letting it do it things

a blow / evape bowl .......when it is done stick in freezer for few mins oil gets hard and allows u to move it over to what ever u keeping it in easier (when oil is cold it shatters so be careful or have a weed covered area)
