Need some experienced users to help steer my course!

Ok, so first off, I'm new here to the forum, first time poster, first time grower. I have been researching like a motherfucker for the past 14 hours as I just had this great desire to build my own grow box. The idea came to me as I laid in bed, awake at 4am, not able to sleep. I noticed my dresser for the very first time it would seem. There it was. Rectanglular shaped in all its glory. And I thought, "what if I had it completely empty and used it to hide something inside, whilst still having the outside appearance of a dresser?". Now, to understand my situation a little better first I must recount the past year. I am a student, enrolled in a University to be left un-named, and this past year has been tough financially, especially for being a student. I have come to look at life differently than I ever thought possible and it has opened my eyes to many things I wish I never had to learn. But this new path of being isn't all so bad. It has allowed me to be more in touch with the world around me, that is to the say the earth and what really is life on this planet and not the illusion portrayed by society/media or this "concrete jungle" we live in. When one becomes strapped for cash, and therefore unable to aquire the basic necceseties to life at ease, they begin to question the system in place that provides these necceseities (or, at least that is what I did). So I became very interested in learning as much as I could about the history of our very short existence on this planet, and by doing so I hoped to learn how we came to be in the situation we are in presently. Long story short, I didn't come to a definitive answer. Our history is so full of misleading facts, mass genocides, atrosicities that are hidden beneath fantasy and lies, that I really had a hard time putting it all together in a logical way that gave we any sense of truth. And that is basically what I came out of it with. Truth. The only thing that matters. I knew that things such as history, religion, and even some sciences are always open for debate and interpretation, which means that the truth behind them depends on the person you ask. I don't accept that. Truth is truth, no matter who you ask, if it is up for debate than it isn't worth arguing over. So I decided to start seeking truths in this world instead. I came to see that there is only 4 fundemental truths that humans rely on for a happy life. (1) We need food (2) We need water (3) We need shelter (or at least protection from the enviorment around us) (4) And last, but most important, we need love. These things are needed by every human being no matter the race, religous beliefs, or social class they belong to. So now that I understood this very simple concept, I began to get angry. I saw all the same things I did before with my two eyes, but what they told me was something completely different. I didn't want to be a part of this "need money, find job, get money, spend money, work, get money, spend money, repeat" society that seems to believe that the only way to live on this planet is by being a slave to private ownership and being dependant on money so you can get food and water to live. So this brings me up to the past two months. I have been slowly learning and purchasing/making things to help me become more self efficient, such as growing food, herbs, looking into making my own biofuel, etc. I hope to one day be able to just take all that I have aquired from this new path and start my own community off the grid where hopefully I can convince others to join me and together we can show the world that there is another way. But that is a long way off, hopefully not to long, and I have gotten a little off topic so back to my grow box.

As I looked at the dresser, I couldn't help but see myself growing plants inside of it. I have flirted with the idea of growing my own weed for awhile now and I just thought, "Why the hell not?". So I began researching as much as I possibly could since 4am this past morning and it is now slowly approaching 4am this morning. I believe I have come up with a viable way to rig this puppy up. The dresser lacks the ideal height for the use of HID lights which, from all that I have learned, are the prefered lights to use for the growing and flowering stages due to their high output of lumens and longer life. But they also produce a lot of heat and I don't think with my dresser (about 3ft total inside height) that I could use them without burning the plants. So I decided that the only option would be to use the CFL or T5 options, with maybe a few used for the growth and flowering stages (6500K and 3000K, respectively), and only one used for the begining of growth/cloning stages. This is something that I really wish I could bend and allow the use of HID lights but at least this way I don't have to worry about the cooling process as much (hopefully). Here is a rough sketch (not to scale) of the dresser and how I intend to manipulate its construction to allow it to be used as a grow box.

As you can see, I have removed the draws, a few of the slider thingys on the inside, and I have added a door and divider as well. I will go into more detail dealing with each number labeled in the diagram. Not starting at 1, starting at the one that works best in explaining the whole picture:

(5) So I figured if I am going to have a door that I will need to make sure it closes tight and seals the light/heat inside. So the black strips resemble some sort of adhesive that will keep this thing closed tight. I am thinking to either use magnets on the door and metal strips on the dresser, or maybe velcro. If anyone has any suggestions than I would appreciate it.

(4) The hinges, obviously, that will support the opening and closing of the door. the attached plates are on the outside of the door and dresser, not the insides as it would appear by the scetch.

(6) I think attaching hooks to the top panel will be optimal to hang the lights I plan to use. This is only a first draft so the number of hooks is still up in the air.

(2),(3) These are both intake vents, for either side of the grow box, and will be combined with these clip on fans I saw at walmart that are fairly cheap and can clip on to the next part I am going to talk about

(7) These are the remenants of the slider thingys that the draws were hooked onto. I couldn't help but leave them in there as it would work really well for the fans to hook onto and it is at a good height for blowing air into the box.

(1) This is the exhaust vent, which I have showed overlapping both sections, so as to exhaust heat from both sides (). I am not to certain as to how I should apply a fan to this. I know how I am going to construct my carbon filter and attatch it to the grow box, but how should I go about using the fan to blow air through this filter so that it gets used properly? I was thinking of maybe attatching a circular extension behind the exhaust vent, one that is the right size the fan I intend to use, and than connect the carbon filter apparatus to that extension. would this suffice?

The reason for the two sections is so that I can use one side for cloning/intial seeding stage and the other side for the actual growing and flowering stage. My thought is that I will start with one female and grow it nice and strong, than take some cuttings and make the clones. Then, when they are ready to be switched to the side with the mother, I will switch them out so the mother can use the one light on the other side to keep in the veg state and the clones can grow and flower on the other side. than switch back and repeat the process over. Is this process possible? It seems logical to me but if someone with experience in the matter has something to say than I would appreciate it before I begin my construction phase.

So that is my skeleton to my grow box. I figure before I make anymore plans i should see what you guys (maybe gals too?) have to say about it.

Beautifully designed you should also have a look at led's they are cooler than hid and you can also get more specific spectrum coverage and they compliment cfl's very well.

Some ppl may like it more if you had more drawings of the sections individually I am an engineer so I can follow your plans pretty well but be sure you plan to scale for your build look forward to watching this work out GL.

honestly i understand what you want is design advice for a dresser grow cab. remove the guts of dresser, glue or screw and cover with wood putty the front of drawer(only the front peice of wood) to it normal location on the dresser, build the door in the back of dresser(more discrete) put dresser on caster wheels so its easy to move. thats how i would go about it.

Wow. Didn't realize I wrote so much there. I guess sleep deprivation can cause temporary memory loss...you know when you get high and you learn something, but forget it the when your not high, but when you get high again you remember it?...does not sleeping for long periods of time work the same? If I decide to learn read up on, lets say quantum mechanics, will I be able to remember if I become sleep deprived again? What about when your drunk? Does it work that way too?........

I think most of you would agree (or at least partailly agree) that as far as being drunk, lacking in good sleep, and some other choice substances, you really don't see memory come back to you from a previously experienced intoxication. Where if you get high, also maybe depending on what type of high, you can learn many things which you can recall later when you become high again. Is this something that could be practiced and honed? So that you can start remembering even when your not high? Would this not be a good workout for our brains? The info is there so shouldn't we be able to access it without the influence of weed?

......and there I go again :dunce:. Ok. time for some sleep I think. Anyone who reads this and replies is an alright guy...or lady in my books

Well how about clicking the button shaped like a star for us ty. Have a great grow and a good nap

scale is very important i design homes and you need to know the size of everything that needs to go in and also what clearences each one of those thing need to function properly not just fit like fans carbon filters and vents so like a vent with something put in front of it will not function properly nor fans and so on make sure lights do not touch anything for fire risk and dont forget a batery powered smoke detector nothing will get you caught faster than a fire good first draft.

I like the idea about putting wheels on it, will probably go that route. I understand the point of using the back panel as the door but my intention was to secure the drawers to the "new" front panel/door so that the door looks like the front of the dresser. This way the exhuast and outlet cords can still go out the back of the dresser without being seen front the front veiw.

I wanted to implement LEDs but I'm not certain where they could be available in my city (I'd rather purchase as much as possible in the city and not online). But if I come across any I will definitely try to find a way to use them. I realize the drawing is not perfect and there will be a better one produced (ortho veiws to scale) once I am certain of the final design specs. ERTW

At the moment I have a fairly good idea of the relative sizes of all the pieces I intend on using in the grow box, as well as the available space inside the box. It should all fit together with enough space for a few plants to grow at least 1-2ft and I will measure it all out once I am certain of the design path. I realize the exhaust vent will be hampered by the dividing board but it should still function to my needs in the grow box (I only need to vent out the odor and little bit of heat created by CFL's/LEDs)

Glad to hear you're considering Led's they are really good for high light out put coupled with low heat and power use my old dormitory would check power usage to see who was growing, but that was back in the old days 2006.
