if you have some experience and a few extra bucks you might consider using a coco\perlite mix.
i'm running my first run with that and thats really much faster growth with almost the same attendance. only need to water a bit more and use different fert and numbers.

I just wanted to check it out so i first picked up a coco\perlite mix for 10 bucks for a 50l bag and a 1\2l bottle of GHE one part total grow fert for 18 bucks. probably costs a friction of that in the US, but thats the prices in Israel.
I had a ph down and up things, ph meter and pots. thats around all it needs.
I got growth around 3 times faster. Leaves are around 3 times bigger as well.
Overwatering is near impossible with that shit. underwatering only occures after a week if you use properly sized pots compared to the rootmass.

That GHE one part thing is shit and lacks a lot of things, but it works, and is cheap. for the record.

If your thinking of doing some changes, try that.

RE: Coco/perlite I'm defo going to use coco on the grow after this one, I just want to take small steps thats all. I have a few grows under my belt, spaced out over about a decade.

How much of a step do you think the coco would be ? I mean what about pH and EC levels ?

I was planning on using an aerated res for letting the tap water sit 24-48hrs, then I can mix the nutes as I need them. I have just purchased an always-on pH and EC meter, and I'm new to this level of sophistication. I don't really want to try out a new medium when I also have new technology to deal with.

But yes, you almost read my mind about using coco, I thought the soil with extra perlite would be a good stepping stone between them.

don't bother - go coco.
I don't have an EC meter at all, there are charts by ml\L for my ferts.

I don't have access to RO water so using a rez is not that much of a good idea due to PH fluncuations.

I don't aerate nothing. just let the water sit in a bucket without a lid.

ONLY difference, for me, using coco is using a different fertilizer, a ph of 5.8-6.2 and that I need to water more often.
As this is only my first run I go straight by the charts and it works for me so far. you can check out my grow to see for yourself.

using RO water, EC readings and all thoes things will sure help but you can work your way around them.

Coco, like all other hydro methods, reacts much faster to feeding than soil. If you overdose something you will see the damage pretty fast.
As I went by the charts I only got really minor N def. that I just ignored and it was solved further on. Probably due to the use of that crappy GHE one part total grow.
As I was just trying out coco and didn't want to spend too much on that tryout, I'm not regreting the use of it. If you have some extra $$$, use something else.
