I have a 40a Intermatic mechanical timer, and want to run two 20a GFI receptacles to power a total of 4 600w lamps. Could someone with knowledge in this area help me out. Total amperage will be 25a. I have a 30a breaker that ought to be sufficient.

what you wanna do is test it with a double pointed lead (one with 2 plugs on it) - plug them both in and if it blows up you know it WAS working ok...!

Seriously I dunno...only just wired my first ever plug the other day

It looks to me like you're trying to wire 120v plugs off of a 240v timer. Correct me if i'm wrong.
here is a pic of my setup.
75% of 30 amps is 22.5 amps your 25 will be pushing it.IMG_1264.jpg

Take this with a grain of salt...It makes me cringe when i see sloppy wiring.....do it clean.

do you have a 240v line run to your timer ?
if so it's pretty self explantory on your timer you will see terminals that say line or load your 240v line goes on line . tie your 120 v from your gfi's to the terminals marked load . OH if your run a 240v line from your panel you need 2 hots ,a neutrel, and a ground without the nuetrel your fucked . so thats three insulated conducters and a ground . If you have the nuetrel there you would just join the nutrels from your gfi's
to your neutrel from the panel .

ympb,

I'm using Lumatek digital ballasts, they are 120/240. Don't worry I plan to clean up the wiring... Just trying to get the damn thing to work at this point.

NewClosetGrower,

I want to run power to both 20a receptacles without overloading them.

kingofqueen,

I have 10/3 wire (30a wire for a dryer), same as you said, three conductors and a ground. So if I understand correctly, the circuit should look something like this:
