Once again fun fact of the day to Google: Dixiecrat.


I feel like there is a thread in the works in one of my notebooks on the history of the the two party system and the events that occurred to put us where we are now. Since there is a abundance of misunderstanding of the evolution on the topic of political parties.

And what happened to the dixiecrats? Oh yeah, they went right back into the democratic party.

Hey champ. That is regarding the official party that disbanded the same year is was created. Dixiecrat is not specific just to the official party but rather the ideology that was started at the 1948 convention and then went on through LBJs presidency. So technically yes the official "States Rights Democratic Party" was proceeded by Democrats but that did not end the social movement in the south that was the Dixiecrats. Southern Democrats continued to evaluate policy through the DIXIECRAT scope. Dixiecrats hung on to their southern way of life until the Civil Rights bill after segregation and "states rights" according to them were violated. The disgruntled voter base in the south (White conservative by our standards Male) swapped to the republican spectrum and that is why Newt Gingrich and his buddies are all Republicans now ;)

I agree with that, my main point was basically that the actual dixiecrats for the most part went back to the democratic party (or disappeared off the face of the earth). Only 3 people actually outright switched parties after disbanding. Hence why Al Gore isn't in the gop.

Dixiecrats didnt vanish off the face of the earth the whole reason LBJ was picked for the VP slot for Kennedy was because Kennedy would not get dixiecrat votes therefor lose the election. So LBJ was the pick because the DNC knew hed be the only one that might get the Dixiecrats attention instead of voting Repub (support from people like Al Gores father). The whole point im trying to get a cross is there is a difference between democrats and southern democrats. Up until LBJ pissed them off enough to leave they were the niche segment in the community that caused the most issues in legislation whether it was democratic or republican. The dixiecrats fought just as hard against northern Democrats as they did against the Republicans. It goes back to the civil war. The War Democrats(northern dems) supported Lincoln and the Copperheads (southern dems) supported the south. So when Lincoln ran for reelection he ran not on the Republican ticket but the National Union Party ticket with his Vice President being Andrew Johnson ( A War Democrat). The assumptions that the actions of the Dixiecrats are one with the Democratic party is the issue here.

is it just me or does al gore resemble, facially, dick cheney, like they could be cousins or something? i swear the whole political process is a big circus to keep us under friendly fascism

When the dixies disbanded they pretty much had a choice of either sucking a dick and starting off at the bottom of the democratic party (which most did) or joining the gop (and starting off at the bottom of the party). So I'm not arguing for the assumption that the democratic party itself was racist. In either case, the people who were part of the dixiecrats were pandering, almost a facsimile to the 'tea party' being the fake alternative to the GOP.
