You would want to be sucking as much air out as possible really, especially if your growing in a hot area... like me. I was worried about noise too, then I got an 8" to replace my 6 coz of heat problems... even louder. It depends where you grpw, to whether noise is an issue. Next door neighbour & bloke across road are coppers and my room is in the roof, figure they can't hear through the roof tiles... I hope.

If you turnned a 6" fan down I doubt it would be very effective, what size is your room? grow on toaster :)

hi thanks 4 input . its about 3mtr by 2 and a half mtrs i only run fan for 15 mins then it goes off for 30 mins and so on . so if i did turn power down i could just leave it on a little longer .maybe ? spliff

You would need a dimmer switch, readily available at the big box stores. I posted one when I built the bud dryer. Its probably in the wrong place. You can find it. VV

Spliff,

Are you exhausting from fan directly to atmosphere? If yes, add more duct on the exhaust side. The additional duct will also allow you to "point" the noise, perhaps into a Carbon Filter. The Carbon Filter will act as a muffler.

Are you using flex-duct or the ridge sheet metal pipe type? If sheet metal pipe, insulate the outside of the pipe.

airflow
supply side -->-->-->[F]exhaust and fan noise

quieter
airflow more duct
supply side -->-->-->[F]-->-->-->exhaust and quiet air-flow

good point rmax, pointing the noisey duct is a really good helper on the noise reduction, I point mine away from my porky neighbours, makes a good diffeerence mate, thumbs up I forgot about that :)

Doesn't the fan seem a bit small for your area?? you obviously have no heat issues, not using any HID lights?

hi all thanks 4 all the replies . my fan dumbs straight into the chimley .i have been thinking of running another duct from the top of chimmley down to the extractor hole .but would be a pain in the ass 2 do .so maybe ill try dim the power first a litt
le .and see if i can get it 2 run quite enough and still be efective 2 clear the hot air . the fan pulls out 480 m3 per hour when its on full .i have 3 600whatt hps .and a veg cupboard inside same room.iwas having trouble keeping the top shelf cool .so ran a 4 in duct from the top inline fan 2 the floor fitted 2 computer fans inside duct 2 push cold air up 2 the top shelf .were the inline fan is .and it really works well .thanks 4 all the advice all .im gonna try dimmer first if that dont work ill have 2 go with the duct .happy growing all spliff

Hey spliff, tell me if that dimmer works out for you cause the one i just boght doesnt do shit, it connects the electric flow and works... for an on off button, theres no speed reduction whatsoever. I think you need a specific dimmer for fans. Good luck keeping it on the DL.
