FWIW I have a 600W setup and run it about 14" above plants with no problems. It runs pretty cool though, I have a fan set up to run one hour on one hour off 24/7

ventilation is key but hey i know your plants are loving the new light i just upgraded from a led and flourescent setup to a 400w hps....

Agreed, you can get closer then 16" assuming you have good ventilation to make sure your not giving them too much heat. I semi stand corrected!

From my last grow. If I remember right the tallest top was ~4" away from the light.
