new grow old idea

hi all, i am soon going to switch back to hydro from soil as the yields im getting are ok but nothing on hydro. first i have to take you all back to my first grow about 3 years ago, my setup was as follows;

1m2 budbox
400w hps (cheap shit)
4inch inline fan/ filter (way to small for extraction)
passive intake vents used
6 inch os fan
garland 1m2 tray on floor
3 11ltr pots
vermiculite/perlite mix 50/50

so long story short i placed my 3 pots in the garland tray and filled the tray with water/ nutrients(ionic) and relied on capilary action from the vermiculite to wick up the nutes/water so it was basically passive hydroponics.
much to my suprise (being a new b back then) the roots soon grew out of the pots drainage holes and filled the garland tray. so basically the roots hand nothing stopping them growing and feeding as much as they could, so obviously my plants were soon trees once they started flowering. I had no air pump or stone in the tray
and my roots never rotted at all infact they were some of the healthiest roots i have ever seen "pure white", in the end my yield was 13.5 ounces of the three plants,

now this was all well and good but the plants were so big the tops infact grew past the light and where bent over. and they just weren't practical

the plants weren't topped fimmed or pruned at all so some of the lower bud was quite airy

so then i switched to organics (biobizz) and my results have been ok but not the best,

now i'm thinking of a new setup as follows

1.2 tent
600w hps (air cooled)
the same garland tray 1m2
15x 6.5 ltr pots
fans filter etc etc

what i am planning on doing is once again sitting the pots in the tray with the vermiculite/perlite mix and allowing the roots to grow out in the solution again but this time using 15 clones taken from a decent mother and only veg till they are about 8 inchs tall then switch to flower and removing most of the lower growth and only growing the tops ( i found because the roots are forever growing and feeding the colas grow huge and dense) so basically i want to know what you all think,

did i just have beginers luck
will the roots rot this time?

should i add an air stone?

let me no what you think.

cheers guys

Sounds good to me man. If your first grow this way worked out well then I would try and duplicate it as close as possible. It seems like an air stone would be beneficial for the roots but obviously not essential if it worked the first time.

Your kinda trying to run a Hempy Bucket, but not quite doing it right. Look up Hempy Buckets and you will find the solution to all your problems.
