With some dispensaries charging as much as $75 dollars for an eighth of medical marijuana, and some illegally-grown marijuana from the streets selling for about $40 dollars an eighth. It sounds like the price of medicine can get very pricey these days.
I'm going to tell you (marijuana patient or caregiver) that if you were to grow your own medical marijuana you would only be paying about $17-$18 dollars for an eighth of some super-chronic weed. (yes under $20 for an 1/8 of Dank Buds)
This is how
Say you decide to set up shop, first you buy a grow guide $40. Then you go to your local hydroponic or garden store, they see that your not seasoned (your a rookie) so they get you to "buy it all". Total at the store is $600 for your ballast, bulb, reflector hood. $400 on your pots and soil-less mix and nutrients, and about $160 dollars on random things the guy says you have to have. Now you should be at a total of $1200 and the grow room is starting to look half way decent.
Ok now you need to get some high quality clones or feminized seeds. You can usually get your clones from a local cannabis club, the seeds I would advise a top seed bank from off the Internet.(do your homework before you send money) This should set you back about $250 for 25 clones or 25 feminized seeds. (total so far $1,450)
Next we have the monthly overhead, OK tell the wife her shoes got to go for a little bit because you are going to rent her closet from her, "for just a little bit". Let's say you pay her $4 dollars a square foot for her 5x5 (25sqft) closet for a total of $100 a month. (about 3months time =$300)
The power bill: (the enemy) Let's say you pay $0.22 a kilo-watt hour and your plan is running your lights 18 hours a day for 3 weeks on your vegetation cycle and 12 hours a day for 9 week on your flowering cycle. Your total kilo-watt hour will be 18x7x3 + 12x7x9 or 1134 kilowatt hours. Now multiply that by $0.22 and you have a total power cost of about $250. Let's add this up again we have $1450 (your start up supplies) and $250 for your clones or seeds, your wife's closet your renting out for a total of $300 and let's not forget the hit from the power company at $250.
This comes up to around $2250 for a medical marijuana patient or caregiver to grow some super-chronic nugs that will help aliviate the pain on many patients.
Even for a first time grower, if you read and follow directions by the end of 3 months you should have at least 1 pound of premium smoke. So take the amount of money you spent $2250 and divide it by 454 (which is the number of grams in a pound). Then multiply that number by 3.5 (the numbers of grams in a eighth) for a Grand Total of $17.35 an eighth
These number are based on a one light (1000watt HPS) grow operation. These cost can be trimmed (plus or minus) but should be a great standard on what to expect when starting out as a new medical marijuana patient or caregiver.
