New operation; questions included

I picked up two clones from a professional grower in my area, and this is what I've done with them in the 2-3 weeks I've had them. As you can see, I manufactured a grow box (3' wide, 2' deep, 5' high) using 2X3's as a frame and some ply for a double hinged door (with a lock), all wrapped with black/white poly. Using a 400 watt HPS in a hood that is ventilated/cooled with a votex 6" fan (the 200-something cfm fan not the 400-something one), also includes passive intake with a 6" inline exhaust fan blowing out the top (it's a shitty fan, bought it just not knowing) and a 6" regular fan for circulation. I bought this 3-pack of Fox Farm nutrients, and ProMix BX for medium. They are contained in 9" square pots, approx 2 gallons of medium. I suppose everything is going well... the clones were kept under fluorescent lights without nutrients, it seems like once I started feeding them and giving them the 400 watts of HPS they just started getting bushier, and a bit taller - but the growth so far seems to be concentrated to the interior of the plant. (I was told the genetics are Monty Python, but I've been unable to find any info about that strain online, so I don't know).

I have the following questions/concerns.

Yesterday I lowered the plants because they temperature probe I have resting in the canopy of one of the plants began reading 82-85 degrees (F). I felt this was a bit high. I've lowered them to keep it 78-82 degrees (F). The tops are now approximately 15" from the glass of the light hood. My understanding of light makes me uneasy and unsure of this setup. The plants didn't show any indication that they were too hot. They are relatively stout (for what they were when I got them), the nodes are spaced about an inch apart, no further. No signs of wilting, heat/light burn or what have you, only the thermometer was indicative of high temps. Should I raise them back up? Again, my light is exhausted with a solid fan; I could press my balls against the glass of this hood without any discomfort (in fact, it would probably be quite comfortable barring the fact it would be extremely weird). I could run the A/C, but it's been in the low-mid 70's outside and that's a waste of money to me. Should I go for the lumen or the temp?

Should I consider, at this point, any kind of plant topping? Obviously, with two plants the yield won't be great, and I'll be turning any airy/small buds into BHO. I'd like to maximize the smoke-able product, so should I top? I watched a growing DVD with this guy that was painted entirely green, he topped his plants right when he started flowering them, to obtain not one but two main colas... I'm considering waiting for my second grow to apply these more advanced techniques, unless I get some strong support to go ahead with it now!

Should I buy supplemental nutrients? Again, it seems like they are getting plenty... and I should rephrase - MUST I buy supplemental nutrients?

Humidity levels are generally low - as low as 18% and as high as 60%, but typically 25-35%. Problem? Fixable?

Should I do any type of foliar feeding? I've heard of spraying plants with carbonated water (seems like most of the dissolved carbon would be forced out of the water from the pressure of the spray bottle, but maybe I'm wrong) or just ph'ed water or quarter strength nutrient feed...?

I'll probably start flowering in a week, maybe more maybe less, playing it by ear/eye. Should I buy one of those mushroom-bag things for some CO2? Seems like it would be a perfect fit.

Any comments on how things look would be much appreciated or how I could improve, and I can take more/better pictures if need be.

This is the earliest picture I remember taking, a few days after I got them, just for a comparison. And I guess, from previewing this post, the "nutrients" image is an attachment.. but those are what I am/will be using.

Hey mathguy, everything is looking really nice.. Humidity should be around 40% so you're okay there. As for carbonated water, people spray it on their plants as a means to provide co2 but its debatable if it actually does anything, also I haven't done any research on a mushroom bag but if it looks like the right fit for you give it a shot.

The heat right now at 78-82 is not that bad but any higher and you're cuttin it close. You could top if you wanted to, it isn't very hard to figure out where to cut and it will help for the future height of your plants not getting as hot. Since this is such a low room height-wise, it might not be a bad idea to try and ScrOG those two (if the plants aren't too stiff to bend).. It would probly maximize your yield and would really help with your future heat problem. As for topping before implementing a ScrOG, maybe one of the experts could chime in on that notion.

That's what I would do but if anyone disagrees please correct me.

Thanks, Organicuz. I hadn't heard of the SCROG technique until this site actually. It's something, one of the many things actually, that I'd like to eventually try. This being my first indoor operation, I'm going to keep this as bare bones as possible. This is so I can see how much yields increase with these techniques. As for the topping; I'd just like to have it verified or debunked if I can just top these plants after one week of flowering in order to create the bi-cola top. If it ends up being any more complicated than that then I'd like to save it for a future "advanced technique" grow.

This is the bag I was mentioning.

You have to let the plant "recover" for a while when u top it. when u top the main stern all the other side branches will get bigger, so it is a good thing to do.

If u plan to flower it in a week just dont do it, it will need more than a week to get good results.

For the humidity, u can put any water container inside your room, and humidity will rise, dont let it get to high, or you can have mold proplems.

Hope it helps

This is what I did today. There was a 20% discount at our local Worm's Way indoor gardening store for its members (which I am) so I bought the 6" Mountain Air carbon filter with the attached 6" vortex fan (the 400+ cfm version). With this addition and with slightly cooler outdoor temperatures, I've been able to raise my plants back up so the tops are now 8" from the glass of the hood. I feel much better about this, and I get to put that $400 filter/fan combo to use!
