New Outdoor Grow Climate Questions

Hi all!

I am FINALLY seriously thinking about an outdoor grow (my first real grow of any kind actually as I am too scared to grow in a rental ). I live in one of the Great Lakes states so I am a little concerned about my climate affecting my harvest time. I have ordered ten "Big Bang" seeds from http://www.cannabis-seeds-bank.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=350.

October is said to be the harvest time, BUT am i wrong to think that as the more north you are (and the sun goes down earlier in the day and earlier in the year compared to my southern counterparts) the earlier the plants start budding and preparing for harvest? Does this mean harvest times for most plants would be earlier than normal? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Note that the first fall frost is usually here in very early October; however, according to http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/long_range/lead05/off05_temp.gif Aug-Sept-Oct temps are expected to be moderately above normal. Should I not be worried then in this situation? Anyone else have success with this, or a similar, strain up North?

No they will start budding as normal(anytime after june 21), you will have to get them in before the first frost . Look at strains that are good producers and finish early, next season im trying endless sky ,mold resistant large yeild,good smoke and finishes flowering in 50 days(or so the add says).

I grew up North for years and had it was very challenging. Droughts in the mid of July and August made it hard for me to keep my plants hydrated, thus I had to carry water out to them, making trails that lead to my plants getting pulled. Hopefully you got your med card and don't have to worry about rippers like I used to have to. Light cycle, short flowering time, you really need to choose your strain so you can have it finished no later then 10 weeks. Your flowering time is only about 10 weeks before first frost. Good luck up-north under the sun!

Yeah the droughts worry me too! Especially given that there was almost no winter here near the very top of the country this year. Been looking at large capacity automatic watering systems (semi-hidden). Does anyone have good experience with these?
According to http://weedsmokersguide.com/big-bang/ the flowering time is 63 days = 9 weeks. Thanks for the luck! I'll need some.

Yeah everything but pure Sativas can handle even a freeze. I was in the Great Lakes region doing outdoor for a while and even week of 30s in November doesn't hurt you. In fact you get some rad purples, and red tints to the buds. Mold can be deadly serious though in late fall when it is cold. If you are in a place with 30s, and 4os during the autumn nights, you really have to shake them of excess water after a rain storm. Mold will go crazy in cold damp conditions. That's my biggest fear when I harvested late, no the temperature itself hurting them. It's the mold.

Is there easier ways to prevent mold than shaking them - say, if I was not going to be available every time it rained? A product to spray perhaps?

I tried to do a search and people suggested using serenade or sm-90. Haven't tried them out though. Would love if someone can confirm this.

Early Skunk from Sensi Seeds is (in my opinion) The best early strain known to man. They don't fuck around. Grew it in Minnesota, it started budding early, got huge buds and to this day was the best smoke I've ever had. I don't fuck with that watered down cannadian shit.

I was. They're strains hardly compare to holland and Amsterdams. You do gotta givem credit for Mighty Might though.

I have heard of people spraying an oil on the plants sometimes to help repel some water. But I don't think I want some foreign oil on my buds unless it was ABSOLUTELY necessary.

On the Sensi Seeds website it says they won't ship to the USA, how did you manage to get their seeds?

I ordered a few years back before they stopped shipping to u.s.. Now I just get their seeds through attitude. I'm also an outdoor breeder and have a good 200 seeds from last year but I still back cross to the original to keep the potency up. Also, if you order through Attitude, choose breeders packs. The sensi seeds come in a sweet box that you can reuse if you make more seeds. I've heard of quite a few cases where people recieved their orders without the garunteed stealth shipping option where they throw the box away.

my plants are in flower, about 4 weeks away till chop, outdoor , dunno what strain they are as i got them from a back of a van from some random dudes driving around New Zealand(I know weird eh) anyways they get rained on a bit , is this bad? they get plenty of sun (when the weathers ok, )and i got them beside the bricks under the eves of my house to minamise the amount of rain on the buds, thanks

Yeah you could try to harvest as early as possible if it gets cold. The easiest way to do that is to pick the right strain.I have'nt used any chems on outdoor stuff, but I also don't mind if a plant has 10 grams of ruined bud, and 300+ grams of killer properly ripened buds! If you don't use a lot of chems, and aren't in a position to check the bitches everyday (aka -guerilla) then you will always lose a little bud to something. Bugs, a deer chew here and there, but it's negligible if you've done all the site prep, and made good use of your weekly trip to check them out.

You know I've done some amazing stuff indoors, but I honestly believe the best tasting weed I've ever had was either an outdoor Bubblegum, or an outdoor Nebula, and yes I know these are dinosaur type ancient strains by today's standards. I think if you get the right soil composition, that the soil biology, and the stressing from being outdoors in the Great Lakes, and being subjected to all that varying weather really adds some character to the weed.
