how much space (in inches preferably) should a 600w hps be from the top of the plants?

0r a general range.

its a digital greenhouse 600w hps (if it makes a difference).

thank you.

put your hand were the plants tops are and if your hand gets hot its too close...is it

just a open bulb?, or do you have a air cooled hood?. in my sun system 2 hood i can

get the light as close as a 12 inches or closer...

i havent set it up yet (or opened the box) but will check.

the reflector is the standard one (maxwing reflector) that comes with it.

i also got the sunrise hi-low reflector/light hanger for an extra $10. other than the hanger everything was stock (no upgrades)

heres a link to what i got: http://htgsupply.com/viewproduct.asp?productID=48956

fyi i fully intend on having a small fan blow on the light/reflector at all times.

im also in the market for a portable dual hose a/c as my grow area does NOT have central air or the correct windows for a window a/c unit.

how hot would a 600w hps get a 10x8 room that is closed off to be 6x6 (with sheets of mylar)?

thanks

it will get very hot if you don't have an exhuast fan also, but yes they crank out some heat, especially if the rest of the room isn't being cooled of somehow

you should be fine with a 6x6 area and that reflector. but yeah i whould put a fan blowing side to side on ether the tops of the plants or right under the light bulb.. you mite need a inline fan to suck out the hot air of the closed off 6x6 area if its complety sealed.?...if not you should be ok.

i did a quick (and kinda sloppy) blueprint of what the room will be like overall.

the dual hose a/c's i been looking into are the best option (i think) that i have as the place has NO central A/C and because of the style of the window it cannot house a window a/c.

the dual hose set-ups come with window adapters that allow the window to be closed with an intake and exhaust hose attached to blow out the hot air and let in the fresh air to be cooled by the a/c and blow into the room.

i currently have my plants/cfl's in front of the window (of course the window is covered to keep nosy people out of my bizness.

i plan on hanging the hps above the plants in front of the window which will have the a/c between the plants and window...

this way i figure it will be most efficient. originally i looked into swamp coolers and single hose a/c's but heard tons of problems with them and how they are largely ineffective in cooling a room.

so i looked into the dual hose a/c units.

i never had experience with them but in theory it seems like it will work...

its gonna cost me $350 to figure it out. haha...thats a lot more than i was hoping to spend... :(

however unlike the cheap single hose units i wont have to drain water out (as the exhaust will handle that).

the model i was looking at also has a dehumidifier so i can keep control of the room's humidity on top of it so its a win-win.

i noticed some came with built in carbon filters but i have yet to find an in-expensive dual hose one that also comes with a carbon filter.

anyone have experience with either a dual hose or single hose? maybe could give some feedback?

i just didnt wanna put the hps too close and burn my babies...

im going to be putting it up tonight...without an a/c (dont have one yet)...today the temps are down in my area (i was just outside an hour ago and it was only 50 degrees)...so things have cooled down.

hoping i can put off getting the a/c for awhile.

right now i have two fans blowing in my grow room...

im thinking of taking this small cheap honeywell fan and placing it facing the hps to keep it cool.

i also have one of those fans that rotate (forget the proper term) that is blowing on my plants.

hoping that for the next month or two i can do this without the portable a/c

I have the same setup, curently covering about 5x5, i think 8 or 9 plants, about 18 inches off the top of the tallest plant.

derfinitly go with a dual hose setup, its ideal for grow rooms, as its sealed, meaning you can upgrade to co2 later and not hafta worry bout upgrading ur air conditioner.

I have a 600w HPS in a cooltube less than 6 inches away from the tops of my plants, but it is a 8 inch cool tube, and i do have a 8000btu p.a.c. always blowing 61 over the plants.

great input guys! especially dirtnap and purfectstorm!

Im going to hand it around 18" off the top (as dirtnap does his) and use that as my starting point.

i will try to drop it a few inches lower and see what happens.

Thanks everyone
