ocnippz - anything like that where the roots are hanging directly in the water - is called a "deep water culture" (or DWC) - I've grown with a system like that for the first few grows... i was new, and i read that was the system that will grow the plants the fastest... and i believe its true, i've never seen plants grow so fast as when i had my DWC system running... BUT it comes at a price... plants in a DWC system are very sensitive, i think its probably one of the most difficult systems to maintain... and i realize you can completely automate it to maintain itself, but there are a lot of variables that can fail and cause a domino effect for everything else to fail...

root temperatures are the most important... you have to run air pumps all of the time, and they pump air that is the same temp as the room through the water 24/7... this pretty quickly raises the water temps... if they get over 72F the water doesnt hold as much oxygen, and bacteria starts to grow on the root system... this is called root rot, if you dont do anything about the temps, your plants wont be big and healthy by the end of flower... you'll be lucky if they make it to the end...

also, you will have to put the air pumps on a batter backup if you lose power frequently... without the air pumping through the roots, they will basically drown, and it wont take long...

they react very quickly to changes in the nutrient solution... it works both ways, if you keep it perfect, they will respond "perfectly"... but if you let it go for 1 day, and the temps are too high, or the nutes are too strong, or an air pump fails - the next day will reveal dramatic changes...

for the care free easy ridin' hydro set up - i'd look at an ebb and flow system... (flood and drain) - and if you got a safe basement, do it big! ;-)

peace

I would rather it be do without the DWC if its going to be that crazy. All i want i guess is some plants in some pots. I just need to know what kind of lights and all of that information. Also any reliable seed sites i would appreciate. Thank you very much. Would also like to know how to feed. how much time under lights. all of that

yup check out attitude seeds I have heard they are the best... as far as soil get some that has lots of those lil white balls in it that is perlite... You can tell a good soil just by running it through your hands(if it is light+fluffly with lots of perlite it good stuff) the best Soil Is Fox Farm Ocean Forest but it runs about 40 bux a bag compared to the 4 bux a bag I use. as far as lighting and area I have been checking out Ebay there are lotsa grow tents and lighting for good prices. for a 4ftx4ft area a 400w hps is about min standard.... in that size area you could do a perpetual grow producing at least an ounce (OZ) every 2-4 weeks. Ive heard of someone in a 6ftx6ft producing 5lbs every 2 months using a 1000w hps.......... GOOD LUCK

1000w is a serious light, you should have a seperate veg room too if your goin with that. and do CFLS for veg.
do you have a design for a room yet ?

I have a very small closet like space in my basement. I am only trying to produce around 6 plants thats if they are female. I will be putting the reflective material all around it (which im not sure what it is called but could use help) and plan on buying a small fan for the room. What are CFLS? and im told you will get bigger and better buds with a 1000 watter.
