Newbie Growing Cubby

First off, thanks for any help I get here. I have been bouncing around the site trying to figure out how I am going to do this. I have a interesting room. It is a cubby under the stairs, 3'10" High, 3' 5" Wide, with 7 ft in depth. The plan is to run the room seed to harvest...using feminized seeds. There may be later expansions to do cloning, but I want to make sure we can do this part right.

The room is going to be framed out with 2x4s and covered black/white foil.

Power. I am going to run 2 14-3 wires off 15 amp breakers from our panel. That will power 2 Outlets.

Any thoughts suggestions or criticism is welcome. Also, I can provide more info as needed.

Here is the equipment I plan on using:

ItemModelNumberAmpsCost
Inline FansInline Vent Duct Exhaust Fan Blower 6 inch 400 CFM 20.97 $ 79.99
Carbon FilterPhresh Filters 90001- $ 161.95

Unless you are planning on running both MH an HPS at the same time all you will need is a lighting set with a switchable ballast.

You're going to be pushing the envelope with that height. I'd go 12/12 from seed/clone or scrog it.

Scrog means "screen of green" where by placing a mesh close above the plant you can train the branches to grow in a horizontal fashion. Or you could get some autoflowering dwarfs like lowrider. If you are just gonna run one 400 watt lamp, buy your light in the components you need for the grow. A shallow aircool hood with glass, maybe a hortilux MH and HPS bulbs, and a switchable ballast, I use a Hydrofarm Powerhouse and its bad ass. Digital are nice too but less reliable. You will only need one inline fan for that size room as you can vent through the hood and have a passive cold air return.

Idk how you're going to be able to utilize the 7' depth with only 3'10" high and 3.5' wide. I could just be mis understanding.
also you don't need 2 inline fans if set the lights up to the same exaust.

Oh and the money you save by not buying the extra fan, buy a cannabis grow bible from your local book store and read it cover to cover,,,,, twice :)

The thought on the second fan was to keep positive fresh air coming in. With that small of a setup, sounds like I don't need it. Keep it coming fellas, this is all useful.

how tall are your pots? and what have you decided to grow cause if your pots a regular 3 gal. pot thats something like a foot tall and your getting a HID bulb and hood thats around 10 inches that only leaves you with about a foot and a half and i feel like that will be cutting it close with the heat a HID puts out. personally with a room that size id either grow a really short bushy plant or autoflower and use a t5 so that way it can get more room and grow bigger cause then youll be able to grow all the way to the light

Ok how about this, you use this cubby as a veg area. Use cfls and you can use smaller cheaper fans to ventilate with.

Then buy a 4x4 tent, 1 inline fan, and a duct booster with a 400w light system, carbon filter- my opinion get a 600w (I got 600w for $180 with cooltube, lights, hanger and timer)

you're going to be spending around $400. Then you have $300 to buy nutes, soil/hydro equip, or what ever it is you might need.

That way you'll have 6.5' of height and 4'x4' can fit 6 plants. Just got to think of ways to use your money. For $700 you could setup 2 tents with HIDs and everything to get you to a harvest.

my space is almost identical to yours.

400w is prolly overkill 250w would more suitable i grow vertically to utilize all the space i can instead of loosing a foot to a light i have the light placed in the center of the room in a cooltube that and i lst like a madman space is small and limited but you do what you can with what you got
--best of luck

This might be a dumb question, but...how is 3'10" not tall enough when, I've seen people growing in rubbermaid storage bins and cardboard boxes? Is it just the lights he chose or something else?

Also can't you train your plants to grow short/fat?

We can tell by your supply list.... Your over thinking and over sizing what you can do in that little area and honestly way to much light for that small of space!

I grew in about that amount of space under steps about 6 years ago using a low rider Rubbermaid tub for a res with constant drip and 2 150's in a cool tube.

Your going to have to use a screen with lots of LST and patience to keep everything low. You will be lucky if you can even do more then 2 plants side by side, at 3'6" wide you will not be able to get to any of the back ones once they fill in. Also if you take cuttings you will need another area to veg them while the big ones are in flower!

I would go back to the drawing board and rethink things!

This is exactly why I posted the list.

Is there anywhere I can find info on the setup you discribed? The low rider Rubbermaidtub? Thanks again.

Check in the hydro/DWC and stealth growing sections and just read thru the posts til you see something that fits what your looking for. Hydro might seem to be a little too much for the first time grower, but really it's not too hard. I just don't think you can get anything worth your time in soil in that space...

Sure there will be plenty more posting and giving their advice too!

Not mine.... Those belong to Google  I live in an anti state now, so no garden for me :cuss:

But that is basically the set up I used under the stairs, only mine were about a foot or so shorter.... And well maybe a few ounces shorter too
