Newbie questions

very new to this, I have been looking at a bunch of different strains of marijuana and am confused because some say feminized and others dont. In order to grow a plant that will bud, is it necessary to buy feminized seeds?

only female plants produce smokeable weed. feminized seeds are supposedly genetically engineered (or something, i don't know the exact process) to produce female plants. when you purchase regular (non feminized seeds) you are taking the 50/50 chance of the plant being either male or female.

there is debate that feminized seeds are more likely to produce hermophroditic plants or be less stable plants, but i have never seen any evidence for this assertion in my growing. go with the fem seeds if you want for your first grow. you are probably more likely to get females and that is always rewarding!

No you don't have to buy feminized seeds to get female bud. It's a crapshoot from seed.
As mentioned, feminized seeds tend to be more like hermie-ized seeds, even the ones guaranteed not to be.
Many find a desired strain, raise one female, then clone it forever. Only way I know to ensure ladies . . . and even then, only if the grower sticks to the method used that produced the female plant in the first place.

Feminized....are 100% female (sometimes hermies)...but they are more expensive
Normal.....there is 50-50% chance you get male-female.....males are pain in the ass they are good for nothing only for screwing up your buds on your females by making seeds on them so If you find a male in your garden DESTROY it.... 1 male can fuck all your females so be carefull....

nice thanks everyone, to go along with the male/female plants, i was reading another thread and somebody posted pictures about early signs of a male, in those pictures what exactly are people looking at? What gives you a sign that a plant could possibly be a male or a female other than the fact that it buds.

It has to do with what the preflowers look like. Before it flowers, it shows evidence of sex. Males have little sacks that look like balls before they flower, females have pistils (little white hairs) that turn into bud sites. It is necessary to have a female plant to flower smokable bud, so feminized seeds not necessarily required.. however, using feminized seeds dramatically cuts your chances of getting males , which as stated above is really lame and they are completely worthless and annoying so yea buy yourself some feminized seeds and enjoy a no-headache grow .. btw, they 'stress' the budding females near the end of the budding cycle so they also produce some seeds which tend to be (greater than the 50/50 ratio or normally (pollenated) flowering plants) females though because the parent was stressed can a lot of the time produce hermie-to-be seeds and not pure females, though it depends a lot on environental conditions of the subsequent grow.. good luck

Experience is knowledge. Yes you can increase your chance of sprouting females by using feminized seeds and saving the headache of males in your garden but if you start from standard seed stock you will get a few males and you will learn exactly what they look like when starting to flower. If your just learning then have fun and experiment. If we didnt have males then we would never have all the amazing strains we have today. By the way most males show earlier than females and if you keep an eye on things when your starting to flower you wont have pollination problems.
