I am setting up a closet grow room. The closet is wide and 25 inches deep. How many watt hps lights should i use?Its a pretty small closet so wondering if 400 would be too much and if 250 would do the job.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I'm in the process of setting up my grow-room and from what I have managed to research and get advice on from the kind, experienced people on here, my closet measures 200cm(h) x 70cm(w) x 60cm(d) and I've got 2 x 42W LCF's for vegging stage and 1 x 400W HPS for flowering.

The HPS will create a fair amount of heat so unless you've got some good ventilation the smaller bulb would probably work better, although you've only given 2 dimensions of your closet so it's difficult to hazard a guess just yet.

I don't know if I'd put hps lights in a closet that size. Ventilation will be a problem as well. Sounds like cfl's might do the trick. Put four sticks across the top and two sticks for side lighting (four footers) and you will be in business. Anyway, I'm still kind of new but that's what I would do. I am also very concerned about a fire hazard and with the cfl lights you pretty much diminish the risk in the confined growing space you have to use. Good luck!!!

I would say its 45in wide,25 deep and 6ft. tall...dont know what other dimensions you might need.
I'm using a 600 HPS in a Rubber Maid storage shed thats about the same size as your closet. If I were you, I'd go with the 400 HPS. Like others have said, you'll need to set up some kind of ventilation though ... and have a small fan blowing in there too. Remember, the smaller the light, the lower the yield. Rule of thumb to shoot for is 50 watts per square foot of floor growing space.

You've got about 8 square feet to light up if I'm adding it up right. To answer you're question you will want about 50w per square foot (for flower) so you're looking at about 400 watts. Like Illegalbreather mentioned though an HPS will heat up that space pretty quickly, so you will have to get some sort of heat exhaust going on in there.

What would you say about LEDS?I m going to be growing lowryder and lowryder hybrids. Was thinking about going with them first but some people kind of pushed me towards hPS lights. I am gonna be growing maybe 5 plants at a time..nothing mjor..just personal. So any info on leds and other advice would help.

I 'd say too, get a 400hps and ventilation........you need ventilation anyway + fan
I have not myself tried them, but LED's seems to be an expensive waste and maybe only good as a supplement........ I dont think you can beat a 400hps with a good full spectrum bulb....
just my 2cents.............

I think you need to consider heat, ventilation and cost. For five plants at a time you can get four double cfl shop lights ($36 total for the shop lights) then purchase eight, four foot grow lights ($80 total). So you have the whole setup for $116 and you will grow decent plants with low cost and low worry for the size of your closet. I totally agree that the hps lights are the best but you will have several more steps to go thorough if you use the hps and the cost will be significantly higher.
