i am going to go against the grain and say - start with whichever one you want.
Another words, you may as well start learning the ins and outs of whichever system you choose to use. I say this because while many problems and mistakes overlap, there are also many soil/hydro-specific issues that you may as well start learning about from day one.
One example would be watering - with soil, watering is very, very important and you have to learn how much and when to water. With hydro (depending on the system) the amount and time of watering is usually not a concern.
I agree with the others in saying, don't get your hopes too high for your first grow or two. Even if you do a lot of planning and reading, you may not be successful (though you have a much better chance than trying to grow without any research).
having said all that, i'll add that while researching and asking questions is necessary and important, the only way you're going to get that all-important-and-valuable experience is to dig in and start growing! good luck and have fun!!
