Everyday, I go to QUICK LINKS and UNANSWERED POST. I see 100s of new but the SAME UNANSWERED POSTS everyday, day after day, after day. I look for the ones I can answer and help the newbie out; CFLS, DWC, Bubbleponics, HYDRO are the ones I always try to reply to. The ones on SOIL, and HID lights, I skip over. I reply to about one out of ten, skip over 9 out of ten, and everyday I see 90 out of 100 STILL UNANSWERED POSTS.

I think the experienced regular members here get tired of answering the same old questions day after day after day from new members. I think the experienced regular members get tired of thinking WHY DIDN'T YOU GO TO FAQ???

I see alot of Newbie questions being answered by Newbies, and the responses are not always 100% correct or accurate either.

IF you are new here, I would FIRST suggest that you look over the FAQs. Then find a thread already relating to your question and post in that thread, instead of starting a new one. You can make friends faster, and for sure get an answer faster too.

I am just trying to fofr some friendly advice.

If you are new here, PLEASE go to Newbie Central and read up on posting here and asking questions.
You can almost always find the answer to any question at GrowFAQ;
FAQ = Frequently Asked Questions.
There is a link to that site at the top of this page.

ONE-
If I can impress one fact upon you, I read here every day where a new grower says "well, I tried ____________and I killed my plants."
"I wondered what would happen if I ________________and I killed my plants"
or "I thought I would try _______________and it killed my underwater pump".
I tried adding sugar and I got ants. I tried adding mollasses and it screwed up my pump. I tried urine.......................I tried dog poop................
GREAT Advice is IF you DO NOT know what will happen, then DON'T TRY IT..........NOT with your first grow.
EXPERIMENTATION IS GREAT, THAT IS HOW WE LEARN, BUT WOULDN'T YOU RATHER LEARN FROM SOMEONE ELSE'S MISTAKES?
You do not want your first grow to be an experiment, do you??? or do you want it to be a successful grow and harvest.
Are you trying to be a inventor, an inovator, or trying to harvest some weed to smoke?
Growing can really be simple, but we tend to want to experiment and we tend to want to always fool with the plants, to mess with them, to try something different, to do some more, and some more, and some more.. THAT IS WRONG THINKING. STINKING THINKING, I CALL IT.
DO THE RIGHT THING AND THEN LEAVE THEM ALONE! LEARN, RESEARCH, STUDY, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS, BUY A BOOK OR TOO.
I see people post "I tried urine, I tried mollasses, I tried dog doo-doo, I tried miracle grow, I added so and so, I made up some grow nutrients, I mixed in blah bla blah. DON'T DO IT !!!!
If it will work right, then you can read here where someone else did it successfully.
TWO-
It is better to do too little than to do too much. It is better to not do enough, than to over - do it. It is better to do less, than to do more.
Think of toothpaste. After you squeeze it out, it's a done deal, and you have to deal with what you have, you can not put it back in the tube. BUT, IF you do not squeeze enough out, you can always squeze some more out later.
Just like spoken words, once said, they are out there.
THREE-
Many new members here will offer advice here, that have never grew a plant in their entire lives. "Build your own Hydroponic System" and "Try some Miracle Grow" and "go get some Halogen Lights" and a lot of bull crap advise. I see successful Soil Growers offering advise on Hydroponics. I see Hydroponic Growers offering advise on how to grow outdoors. When you read advise, look to see if that person is new here or been here awhile, if he or she has ever grown before, and if he has more than a few posts, posted, or is new here. Beware of advice starting with "I heard that........." OR "MY BUDDY TOLD ME ......................"
FOUR-
If you are going to grow..............
DO NOT TELL ANYONE.
DO NOT TELL ANYONE.
DO NOT TELL ANYONE.
INTERNET PURCHASES ARE SAFER THAN WALKING INTO A HYDROPONIC STORE.
LOWES AND WALMART AND HOME DEPOT ARE MORE SAFER.
Every time I read on here that someone got busted, it was a wife, x-wife, girlfriend, x-girlfriend, nosey neighbor, or mad partner or mad upset buddy.

THE PLANTS ARE GOING TO SMELL VERY LOUD AND AWEFUL.
DECIDE ON INSIDE OR OUTSIDE.
DECIDE ON SOIL OR HYDRO.
DECIDE ON SEED OR CLONES.
DECIDE ON WHAT KIND OF LIGHTS.
ARE YOU GOING TO VENT THE HEAT?
FIVE-
IF you decide on an INDOOR GROW, then BEFORE you do anything else,
Spray the area good with a good ALL PURPOSE bug spray, like HomeGuard. Don't just use a spray made to kill ants or only roaches. Everyday someone posts here that spider mites ruined their crop.

Figure out how you going to deal with
  • the heat or temperature.
  • the smell.
  • the spider mites.
  • the humidity.
  • the neighbors, parents, girlfriend, neighbor and deadbeat friends.
  • source for good water.
  • air movement or air circulation.
SIX-
there are some very wonderful people here from all walks of life; hippies, rednecks, hill billies, educated, not educated, men and women, young and old, etc. Be polite and seek the advise of the experienced and you will be glad that you did.
Many people here wish someone had offered them the above advice before they got started.

I agree, though I try to help them out still, but usually want to say why did you start another thread to ask when do I harvest lolz, or how do they look etc..... maybe something like this should be added into the TOS agreement upon signup, or have new members not be able to create new threads until they make so many posts. Ive made 1 thread my whole time here , id rather hijack a dead thread thats similar to what I need than make a new one to waste more bandwidth.

Hit the nail on the head here, Roseman.

As an untrained typist, there's a limit to how many times I'm gonna explain how to get rid of fungus gnats . . . and it gets old hurrying to a "PLEASE help" post only to find a 2 inch seedling pic with shriveling cotyldons.
I started doing this in the 60's when there was no advice. You new growers don't know how much research some of us have done and would be wise to find a few pro growers here on RIU and follow their advice.
But it's no sweat off my ass if ya wanna goof off for a while first.

also, try using the search, it helps alot, you can normally find the exact question you are looking for, and see a debate amongst it in the thread

sounds like another hate thread.

no one is forcing anyone to answer any questions. not once, not a 1000 times.

I am just trying to offer some friendly advice. advice to newbies.........and I see NO hate. I was sincerely just rying to be helpful. Why do you think I visit so many unanswered threads everyday? JUST TO BE HELPFUL.

did you read all of it? or just scan a part?

If you think it is HATE, then delete it. But I assure you, it was created with good intentions.

Well said man i started a few new posts myself but then searched and answer was there..
SO ALL NEWBIES GO TO NEWBIE CENTRE!! :D I am a newie so i will go there lol

this site is a PUBLIC FORUM. it's whole purpose is to post questions to be answered. otherwise we'd be wikipedia.

here we go with another "use the faqs" thread. i see as many of these as i do "how's my plant" threads.
