Total weed growing newbie, although I have done my homework. I do have some experience with botany, and I hope it helps me in the venture.

What I have, or have ordered:
GrowLabs120: 3'11"x3'11"x72" (or something)
1x Lumatek 400W/600W MH/HPS ballast
1x Fresca Sol: Water cooler light fixture w/reflector
5x T8 Daylight tubes (from other projects)
5x Paradise Seeds - Femmed - Sensi Star seeds
A ton of "screen" (like chicken wire, just a little thicker, and the holes are bigger)

Need to get:
HID lights (have questions)
Carbon Filter w/fan (have questions)
Nutes (doing my homework still)
Co2 (I hear this can be key for nice colas and yield?)
Grow medium (haven't decided on soil or hydro for 1st grow...hydro for 2nd and on)

So I planned on using the T8's to germ, let sprout, and then use a MH to veg the rest of the way. I plan on screening these gals, but am still deciding if I want to go SCROG of more of a training route...probably scrog.

I have been hearing from a lot of people the I will get tighter internode spacing, if I veg with CFL's or even the flouro's.

Grow Question 1: What do you all think for vegging? MH, CFLs or Flouros to get tight node spacing, and big colas (and why)?

Anything I have forgotten, any recommendations right off? Many more questions coming, not to mention pics, and a half-assed journal. (~_^)

[EDIT:] Forgot to mention, smell is a major issue...my only real concern.

tighter nodes are due to the lights being right above the plants tops. i germed for 3 weeks with cfl then a week with MH. 400 watt 24 hours a day

check out my first grow (found in threads i started) and my second grow, which is in my signature. lots of questions asked and solved in those

CFL for the first 2 weeks, followed by a MH for the rest of the veg cycle. The closer the better, but not to close, a nice compat plant is caused by lighting being close enough the plant doesn't need to stretch and grow for it.

So you think I should get some CFL's and ditch the T8 tubes I have? If so, how many watts, how many lights for the area defined above w/5x plants? (maybe 4x plants if I'm screening. Need to see how well the 5 germ...)

Also, Should I burn a 400w or 600w MH and HPS lights, having the water cooled Fresca Sol fixture(I think the Fresca only supports 400w MH, but both the 400/600 HPS)?

if you look in my first grow it shows i have 4 100 watt CFLs arranged in a way thatll reach (greatly) 8 seedlings and will work till they reach about a foot tall. My first grow i only vegged with cfl and STILL got nearly 12 oz dry off 1 plant.

Not sure what you mean man, but i would probably go 400mh for veg and 600 hps for flower. Depending on the colour temp, you could probably just use your t8's without to big of a difference.

Your grow looks amazing bigbilly! Forgive me for not reading every post, but I'm stuck at work.
Choof, sorry. I wasn't sure if I could use a 600w HPS in that small area, but it looks like I can! =)

Grow Question 2: Do you think I should SCROG these ladies, or let the grow natural (or do some crazy training method)? I'm working with almost 4'x4', and will be using 1x 600w HPS w/water cooling. I prefer quality to quantity, but yield is obviously key...

Don't know how you got 12 ounces off 1 plant using cfl's o_O

no no, i vegged under cfl for a month, then i went to 12/12 for a week under MH (400 watt) then into HPS 400 watt. sorry to confuse you brother. :) i wish i could get those kinda numbers with CFL.

You can use aslong as you have good ventilation!

I personally like a plant growing how it does naturaly.

Need to get:

Carbon Filter w/fan (have questions) - what do you need to know?
Nutes (doing my homework still) - house and garden, you pay top dollars but recieve best quality you can buy.
Co2 (I hear this can be key for nice colas and yield?) - there is plenty of free/cheap ways to produce sufficient co2
Grow medium (haven't decided on soil or hydro for 1st grow...hydro for 2nd and on) - i use hydroton for fast quality growth, but to achieve a very pleasent taste/smell i've herd organic/soil is the way to go!

Carbon Filter w/fan (have questions) - What kind/size would I need with a 4x4x7 room, and how big of a centrifugal fan?
Nutes (doing my homework still) - What is house and garden? Are those the types of nutes I should look at?
Co2 - What do you recommend to keep the room @ 1500ppm Co2?
