Noob grower. Pics!

Im growing two plants from bag seed under a 400 w mh bulb, switching to hps when I start flowering. They are in Fox farm ocean forest soil. Ive named them Thing 1 and Thing 2, i'm not really sure what strain they are from and if they are male or female.

my questions are what are the spots on thing 2 and why are the leaves shrivelling on thing 1

The spots could be from water getting on the leaves while the lights are on. If you mist them, do so while the lights are on unless directed by a product's label. Could also be the start of a cal/mag def...they look healthy to me. Good job.

thanks for the re assurance. any advice on when to start flowering them? The larger one is about 17" tall, and the shorter one is about 12" tall

Depending on how much head room you have those babies are ready to flower.

I've got about 6'. I also have two auto flowering seedlings started about a week and a half ago. is throwing them into the grow room at the apropriate time going to be a problem, given the two plants now turn out to be girls?

...you shouldn't have any problem other than the height differences. You can stack the auto flowering plants ontop of something to make your canopy even, problem solved.
Your plants are going to grow twice, maybe three times the present height by the time you harvest.
