Day 25 of flower, northern lights. Don't even scrub the air yet... There's barely any smell to er, if there is a smell, it smells like fucking piss? What's going on? Terpenes aren't there yet? The fuck?

NL is a indica, yes?

Piss as in ammonia?

NL5 x Haze has very little smell... Back in the days before everyone had a carbon scrubber that was a plus! Most phenos of this strain smell like mild incense. I had a Jack Herer pheno that I swore smelled like piss... It was great smoke though!

NL is one of this strains that breeders selected for it's lack of smell....It's supposedly a combination of Thai and Afghan landrace strains...VERY psychhoactive...but not very terpy...That's what I read somewhere, anyway. It used to be THE strain back a few years ago...but trends change. Now, everyone wants the heavy STANK weed! I want it, too!

But, at least NL isn't a complex hybrid that contains genetics from half a trillion strains....Maybe in the future, a breeder could self it and then start selecting phenotypes that stand out as stinkers and ultimately get back to those old landrace flavors and traits....!

I don't think it's supposed to smell like piss, though....but at day 25, it's only starting to develop it's terpenes....The smell will run through a few different odors before it ripens completely. Be patient. It might turn out some really nice smoke!

I once grew a strain that I believe was from a Gigabud plant that was repugnant in flower and when dried. Probably heavy in ammonia. I just looked up Gigabud and it's parents are Northern Lights and Big Bud. I stopped growing it because it had a tendency to throw out a male flower at 6 weeks but it was a superbly hypnotic indica! I don't think you have anything to worry about!

Not really ammonia, it's a weird smell with trace of piss if that makes sense... Went in the tent and gagged. Not looking forward to smoking this shit to be honest. Ill remain patient. If I don't see any changes I'm chucking it in the woods that's for sure! It's that bad!!

Sure thing, man! I hope it ripens into something really great!

I grew a Vortex plant a long time ago and when it first started really setting buds at around day 21, the thing smelled like someone was boiling cauliflower...which I can't stand the smell of....but at day 70, it had taken on a whole array of different kinds of funkiness and rotting fruit smell....and the flavor was incredible!

NL isn't just "any" old strain. If it is legit, then you have some world-renowned genetics in your hands...But, it shouldn't be repugnant or smell like piss and make you gag!

NL isn't a stinky strain in the first place ......at least not in my experience ...actually ran several last go image.jpg
Good smoke and decently frosty....low smell

Do you have pics?

Now THAT does NOT look like NL -in my recollection. NL is a pure Indica and the leaves on your plant are thin and narrow -more like a Sativa....but I suppose it could be possible...But you might have a Cat Piss Sativa and not a NL Indica...just suggestin'! ;)
I know the leaves looks like a sativa dominant. I've been telling myself that since the second set of true leaves... The finger count on the fan leaves are high also to be an indica.

I think Northern Lights came from the days when different breeders used the same name for many different genetics. I noticed your genetics is called Northern Light... I bet it's a different take on Northern Lights.

As far as wanting to chuck it... I can understand what you're thinking. I am repulsed every time I open the jar of that Gigabud hermie... But it is an amazing smoke so I'm glad I didn't chuck it!

def dont chuck it... worst case, if its terrible smoke, you could see if has potential to make good wax. ill say that if it smells like piss, and the leaves look like they do, its probably a version of northern lights.. bred with a cat piss strain(legit ive come across a strain named that) I have also smoked great weed that smelled like cat piss as well.. so if you hate the smell, learn to make iso wax and dab your ass off.. then try a diff strain.

My .02, don't chuck it. Back in the day I used to get bid off a guy I knew. It smelled like straight cat piss in the bag, but holy hell was it fire when we smoked it. It didnt taste or smell like cat piss when smoked either.

im just wondering, is the smell coming from the plant? or the growing media, no sitting stagnant water anywhere? no dead earth worms?

Ive grown NL and it didnt stink of piss, what additives are you using, many organic boosters can leave undesirable smells as bacteria break them down.

Neem oil stinks of cat piss as does other oils, did you neem it?

just a thought

p.s the plant looks good, dont chuck it, run it to the end you might be pleasantly suprised

I grew Sensi Seeds NL #5 back in the 90's. It started flowering with a sweet gumball odor and finished with the sweet smell of pine, just like a Christmas tree. Not real loud but you definitely wanted to vent her up the chimney or visitors would know you were growing. She was so very Afghan dominant with big fat leaves and a short stature.
She finished in 8 weeks and was the sort of weed that made a car full of people I was in, drive 5 miles past our turn on the freeway, before anyone noticed.
