NOT Filtering your exhaust air, a bad story.

I have a friend who was growing hydroponics; one of the nice little clones I gave him.
He got overanxious and didn't bother to filter the exhaust air out of his 2 x 3 x 5' grow box, and he was living in an apartment complex. You can only guess this turned out to be bad news.
He was in a bind and I helped him trim it up and hung it in my room.
This plant was only six weeks into its 12/12 cycle.

Had this poor thing been able to ripen his estimated yield would probably have been over a half of a pound. I see at least a quarter pound hanging in my room if not more and a lot of hash material probably 6 to 7 g and make bubble bag dry ice.
He's a member here but I thought he might be to a little bit embarrassed to talk about this and damn you just got to cry for him.
I guess is just a reminder that anything can go wrong at any time.
By the way his grow was blowing mine away.

Well did neighbors give him a heads up or complain to him or did he just decide to end grow himself?

I'm in the middle of nowhere with a neighbor about every mile or so and I still use carbon filters, he fucked up. Another 2-3 weeks it would of been ripe, sucks balls.

Down stairs neighbor had her daughter visiting and said she smelt weed. Both my buddy and his girlfriend were at work at the time, when the cops came over.
Since the cops did really not give a fuck, the landlord left a 10 day eviction notice unless the situation was cleaned up.
He did not want to put his girlfriend through all the stress, so he just yanked it and cleaned everything up.

that deffinately sounds like a bad story... i wouldn't attempt any kind of growing any time soon if people were complaing and the cops came... + happy wife = happy life (or so they say) lol :leaf:

Man that sucks but i know how he feels, I did my first grow with a home made filter and the whole house stunk, I didnt even want people coming over. I ended up chopping a bit earlier than i planned, this time i spent the 100 dollars and it was well worth it. I would always advise anyone who wants to do a stealth grow to not even start until they have a carbon filter. One plant can stink up the house

all that work, money, and time right out the window because he wanted to cut corners...to put it nicely. If youre in a building with other people, a scrubber is a must. If not, you might as well, just open your windows up, let the grow lights blast outside at night, light up a joint on your neighbor's porch, and blast some Creedence Clearwater Revival, because I see a bad moon rising.

I think you might be grossly overestimating that weight, let us know when you weigh it after drying.

Basically you end up with around 1/4 of the wet weight.

There's a reason growing cost money. Anyone can drop a bean into a dixie cup. Growing quality herb and going undetected for 4 months requires thought and money.

Don't tell, smell, or sell less you are prepared to assume the consequences.

In my experience you loose around 80% of the weight from wet to dry.
I don't know because I never bother weighing wet weed. I'll still stick to my 1/4 pound estimate though and will post finals when they come in.
The entire drying plant was not pictured there is plenty more.

Do not get the wrong idea he's smart and had literally procured everything except the filter.
I thought the tale was worth posting; to show people that even the smallest oversight in your setup can end a good grow early.
He is encouraging me to try his deep water culture Hydro setup, so I can increase my own knowledge of how the plants grow, what they need, ext...
I think that I will if I can find it the space in my rooms, as he is down for a while.

Sounds like you got him off on the right foot with a nice clone. He just wasn't ready to run yet.

Thanks for sharing the story AZP. You're right, hope it educates some of the members out there.
Odor is a killer, especially coming from my wife's feet. :spew:

had this exact same thing happen to me my first grow. minus the cops. but neighbors smelled it talked to the LL and BAM eviction notice on the door.

looking back i wish i had not tried to DIY my filter and just bought the real deal. no filter is just as bad.

The filter is the most important part! It's what's standing between you and getting busted.

My C'99 did not smell much during the first 90% of her life... the last 2 weeks and then on the line (hang whole) my C'99 started stinking up bad... Now I was also growing Blueberry Gum and this strain does smell during flowering and hang drying... Very strong in the jar.. and yummy... ok, sorry going off of a tangent (good smoke in da house) I would not have done this grow with out a filter!!! It DOES make a difference. I remember buying some nutrients from my local hydro store and one guy was wheeling out a 2 to 3 foot filter box. I was thinking that if a cop were to watch this... they would probably wonder. Made you think that this guy had a 30 square foot grow room LOL. But, yeah what mr2shim said!

Sort of like building a custom car and putting vice grips for a steering wheel. In some places this is accepted but when it comes to johnny law or eviction it's safest to check all the boxes. At least go buy a 10 dolla can of bathroom pretty. I bought a Ona can.. linen. Wiped out everything, dog, weed. I still have my charcoal going but for those door to face meetings nothing says Fresh Like a nice Bathroom air freshener.

Just wanted to thank you for this story. This was the final thing that pushed me over to get a proper filter and fan. Until now I've been trying to be a cheap bastard and do a diy filter and weak ass fan. The only thing that could possibly get my grow discovered is smell. What's 45 euro to keep my ass out of jail?
